Customer states:

1. The cigarette lighter insert is sticking
and
The cigarette lighter does not work.
and

The vehicle fuse for the cigarette lighter has tripped but the wiring is OK

All three of the above complaints/findings must occur together!
OR

2. The vehicle fuse for the cigarette lighter has tripped.
After replacing the fuse, the system functions as usual and no irregularities can be detected in the wiring.

No relevant DTCs are logged.

Technical Background

If the customer statement matches #1 in the Condition segment above:
If the cigarette lighter socket is
used as a 12 V electrical socket,
the bi-metallic clips (Figure 1) in
the socket may be widened by
using 12 V adapters.

These adapters can have different
shapes and contacts (Figure 2). S

As the bi-metallic clips are
widened, the insert no longer fits
correctly in the socket.

If the cigarette lighter is pressed
when the bi-metallic clips are
widened, the insert may pop out
too early before the temperature is
reached (cigarette lighter does not
heat up).

The customer now tries to prevent
the lighter from popping out too
early by holding the cigarette
lighter down by hand (Figure 4).

This can cause the cigarette lighter
to heat up for too long and thereby
triggers the overheating protection
measure when a certain
temperature is exceeded.

The overheating protection
measure trips the vehicle fuse and
permanently disables the
cigarette lighter. All cigarette
lighters used by Audi are protected
against overheating.

Recommendation:

If the customer statement matches #2 in the Condition segment above:

Electrical equipment with a power rating of more than 100 watts must not be used with the cigarette lighter. This
does not apply to the compressor in the breakdown set (see Owner's Manual).

If electrical equipment with a higher power output is used, the vehicle fuse may be tripped.

The overheating protection measure for the igniter may also be triggered.

Recommendation:

If available, the 12 V socket (Figure 5) should always be used for external electrical equipment (for the installation
of the 12 V socket, see the Owner's Manual
