CONTINUOUS VARIABLE VALVE DURATION (CVVD)
SUBJECT:

ACTUATOR OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT

This bulletin provides information to replace the Continuous Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) Actuator seal on
some 2021-2022MY Sorento P/HEV (MQ4 P/HEV) vehicles produced from September 02, 2020, through
February 24, 2022. The affected vehicles may experience a slow oil leak coming from the CVVD actuator oil
seal and potentially associated oil smell due to the oil seal material degrading over time. To correct this, follow
the procedure outlined in this publication to replace the CVVD actuator oil seal with an improved part on the
applicable vehicle.

 NOTICE
A Technical Service Bulletin is a field fix repair program without customer notification that may be
performed during the warranty period. Any dealer requesting to perform this repair outside the
warranty period will require DPSM approval.

SUBJECT:

ACTUATOR OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT

Repair Procedure:
1.

Disconnect the 12V negative (-) battery
terminal.

2.

Release the residual pressure in the fuel line by
referring to “Engine Control / Fuel System →
Fuel Delivery System → Release Residual
Pressure in Fuel Line” in the applicable Shop
Manual on KGIS.

3.

Remove

the

Continuous

Variable

Valve

Duration Actuator (A) by referring to “Engine
Control / Fuel System → CVVD Actuator →
Repair procedures” in the applicable Shop
Manual on KGIS.

Tightening torque for CVVD Bolts (F – H):
13.8 – 18.1 lb.ft (19.0 – 24.5 N.m)

4.

Using a flathead screwdriver or a seal puller,
remove the CVVD oil seal (B) from the cylinder
head cover (C).

CAUTION
DO NOT scratch or damage the inside
of the seal mounting area on the
cylinder head cover (C).

ACTUATOR OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT
Thoroughly clean the seal mounting area using
a clean cloth.

7.

Install the new seal (B) on the engine cylinder
head cover (C).

 IMPORTANT
When installing, ensure that the new
seal (B) is seated properly. If the seal
is not seated deep enough or too
deep, it can cause oil to leak.

8.

Thoroughly clean any oil or debris from the
CVVD actuator (A).

9.

Reinstall the CVVD actuator (A).

 IMPORTANT
When installing the CVVD actuator,
ensure that the dowel pin (D) is
inserted into the cam carrier hole
after inserting the shaft (E).

ACTUATOR OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT

Tighten the bolts in the following order:
1.

Lightly tighten the bolt (F).

2.

Tighten the bolt (G) to the torque
specification below.

3.

Tighten the bolt (H) to the torque
specified below.

4. Tighten the bolt (F) to the torque
specified below.

Tightening torque for CVVD Bolts (F – H):
13.8 – 18.1 lb.ft (19.0 – 24.5 N.m)

11.

Reinstall all of the remaining removed parts in
reverse order of removal.

12.

Confirm normal engine operation.
