Condition
Some customers may comment on an oil canning or popping noise originating from the
roof area during or after an automatic car wash.
Cause
The cause of the condition may be force from some air dryers at an automated car wash
can cause flex in the roof panel, causing a loud oil canning type sound.
Correction
Repair any damage done during the event and apply stiffening patches and install roof
panel longitudinal bow to the underside of the roof panel following the procedure listed
below.
Service Procedure

preparing, classifying, packaging, marking, labeling, and shipping dangerous goods. In the event of a
conflict between the procedures set forth in this bulletin and the laws that apply to your dealership, you
must follow those applicable laws.
If you encounter a vehicle with the above concern, repair any damage done to the roof by following the proper repair
procedures within SI.
Once the roof is repaired of all damage, complete the following procedure to install stiffening patches to the
underside of the roof panel.
1. Drop the headliner, but do not fully remove from the vehicle. Refer to Headlining Trim Panel Replacement in Si.

2. If the vehicle has already had the 5 stiffening panels installed to the underside of the roof panel in
the RED locations in the illustration above, proceed to step 4. It is not necessary to remove any of the stiffening
panels that have been previously installed before installing the roof bow.

3. Once the headliner is dropped (but not removed) apply the 2 stiffening panels to the underside of the roof
panel in the RED locations in the illustration above.

5. Using magnets to hold the roof bow in the proper position (Align the center line of the roof bow to the center line
of the triangles in roof bars as shown in the above image).
Drill holes in the underside roof structure using the pre-drilled roof bow as a template- and using depth control
device on bit.
6. Remove the roof bow.

7. Apply crash durable structural adhesive Fusor 2098 or equivalent as called out in the graphic with a 3mm width
of wet out along both ends.

8. Apply panel vibration control material - anti-flutter SEM #39977 or equivalent along the length of the bow as
called out in the above graphic.

9. Install Roof Bow to the vehicle and Install Rivets (x5).
10. Once the panels and roof bow are installed, reinstall the headliner. Refer to Headlining Trim Panel
Replacement in Si.
11. Verify the condition is corrected
