SUBJECT:

Check steering box mounting bracket bolt torque & check bracket for cracks.

ISSUE:

Buses were found with loose steering box mounting bracket bolts and damaged
brackets.

SUMMARY:

Check the four mounting bolts that attach the steering box mounting bracket to
the frame of the bus to ensure they are torqued to the correct value. Check the
brackets around any loose bolts to ensure the bracket is not damaged or
cracked.

INSTRUCTION TO SERVICE

PROCEDURE:
1. Set park brake and chock wheels.
2. Turn the main battery disconnect switch to the “OFF” position.
3. Open the access door at the streetside front of the bus and locate the steering box and steering box mounting
bracket in front of the streetside front wheel.
4. Raise the bus in accordance with the lifting procedures in the Service Manual.

5. Using a calibrated torque wrench check the torque on the four mounting nuts and bolts that secure the
steering box mounting bracket to the frame of the bus. The hardware should be torqued to 165 ± 8 Ft-Lbs.
Apply a torque stripe after the fasteners are torqued to spec. Record the bus number of any vehicle found to
have loose bolts and report to your New Flyer Regional Support Manager.
a) If the hardware is loose and has been damaged, the damaged hardware should be replaced with a new
bolt NF P/N 10B12036, two washers NF P/N 20W12000 and a nut NF P/N 042439. Torque hardware to
165 ± 8 Ft-Lbs using Never Seize NF P/N 5928660 on the fastener threads. Apply a torque stripe after the
fasteners are torqued to spec.

6. Check the steering box mounting bracket for cracks around the mounting bolts. If the bracket is cracked it
must be replaced with a new bracket NF P/N 328380. See Section 3 (2.12.5.) of the Service Manual for
steering box removal instructions and Section 3 (2.12.10.) for reinstallation instructions.

7. Remove all tools and debris from work area to return coach to service condition.
8. Lower the bus.
9. Close and secure the streetside front access door.
10. Turn the main battery disconnect switch to the “ON” position.
