Summary
Under this service action, Audi
dealers will replace the starter-alternator in affected vehicles at no cost to owners. A defective starter-alternator may inhibit start/stop functionality which could increase CO2 and other emissions while the vehicle is stopped. Emissions still remain within certification standards. Section B – Check Starter/Generator Software Version
CRITICAL REPAIR STEPS
STOP!
It is essential to perform the following actions for the
-VAS5908- battery charger.
Switch it off and back on again. The battery charger’s default setting will switch the charger off automatically after a
period of time if it is not switched off and back on.
The battery charger’s display must have switched off before it is restarted.
Operate it in charging mode.
Set it to a charging voltage of 14.8 Volt (access code 6161 may be necessary or activate DIAG+ mode by pressing
and holding the select button if the charger has not been connected to the battery or has not been started). Refer to
the battery charger owner’s manual for further information. DO NOT change any settings that will damage the
charger or the vehicle.
If the ignition is left on with an insufficient charging voltage, damage to 48V battery may occur.
After the repairs, the battery charger must be restored to the original voltage value.
•
Connect the VAS5908 battery charger.
•
Ensure charger is set to charging voltage
of 14.8V; voltage shown in ODIS must be
over 14V.
•
Scan the vehicle using GFF.
•
Select DA 00CC .
•
Check the software level .
•
If the software level is less than 0562:
•
o
Replace the starter/generator.
o
Proceed to section C
If the software level is equal to or greater than
0562:
o
The starter/generator does not require
replacement.
o
Proceed to section D
NOTE
The starter/generator shown has a software level of
0523 and would require replacement.

CALIFORNIA ONLY Requirements for Emissions Campaigns Having Customer Notification
The California Air Resources Board and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) require emissions-related
campaigns to be completed prior to vehicle registration renewal. When campaign work is done you must provide
the owner with a signed “Vehicle Emission Recall – Proof of Correction” certificate (RC EMIS_CAL VW).
Certificates can be ordered at no cost online via the Compliance Label Ordering portal at www.accessaudi.com.
TIP
Ensure owners are aware of the importance of retaining the completed certificate for their records. It should be
mailed to the California DMV only upon request.
