Introduction
Allison Transmission has introduced continuous product improvements to help reduce several failure modes
on 4800 Series WBD/ORS transmissions operating in mining applications. The failure modes are induced by
torsional activity, lack of comprehensive vehicle maintenance and improper operation. Allison will support adding
these new features to the serial numbers found in Table 4 and Table 5. This includes replacing the existing
hardware with a new locking washer, shorter output flange and a software update to prevent neutral coasting and
shift cycling. Allison will cover the transmission parts listed below for this update through warranty claim filing. In
partnership, the OEM will cover the labor necessary for this hardware update, driveline inspections and software
updates.
Procedure

First, an inspection of the driveline, powerpack mounting and critical suspension components must be
completed, and all worn or damaged parts must be replaced.
Hardware:

Refer to Instruction Sheet 378 (included within kit P/N 29572633 (Kit-Washer, Flange)) for service
procedures necessary to replace the output flange and install the new lock washer.
Software:
If the transmission is equipped with 6th Generation Controls, the TCM must be updated to software level
C244, and Neutral Coast Inhibit Shift (NCIS), DynActive® and Low Speed Grade Assist (LSGA) must
be enabled. Additionally, Downhill Speed Control (DSC) must be enabled when paired with compatible
engine controls that support the necessary CAN messaging. If the transmission serial number is listed in
Table 5, the transmission is equipped with 6th Generation Controls.
Determine the TCM assembly number. The TCM assembly number can be found within Allison DOC®
under the TCM information data field. If the TCM assembly number begins with "73CRxxxx" (refer to
Figure 1), proceed to the next step. If the TCM assembly number starts with "63CRxxxx", the transmission
is equipped with 5th Generation Controls and does not require a TCM software update.

Use the TCM assembly number from the last step and the cross-reference in Table 2 to load the
correct replacement calibration with TCM Reflash. Ensure the equipment engine controller software and
calibration is updated to properly integrate with the added transmission features.
NOTE: Allison’s Downhill Speed Control (DSC) feature will not operate properly if the Road Speed
Limiting (RSL) J1939 CAN messaging is not enabled within the equipment engine controller calibration.
Please work with the equipment OEM to ensure proper integration of this new feature and contact your
local Allison Customer Support representative if you have any questions.
NOTE: The Neutral Coast Inhibit Shift (NCIS) feature is only available with 6th Generation Controls and
is not backward compatible with 5th Generation Controls.
NOTE: 6th Generation offline software updates will need an Allison Cyber Security USB Dongle. Refer to
TI8989EN for more information regarding 6th Generation offline software updates.

Using the 4WARD system with the information outlined below in Table 3, Allison Authorized Service Network must
submit a claim for kit P/N 29572633 (Kit-Washer, Flange) only. All labor, travel and additional charges are to be
paid by the OEM under this Field Action.
