Unnecessary starter replacements can result from customer complaints regarding engine starting issues. A new
Starter Troubleshooting Guide has been created to provide a comprehensive list of starting system checks, which
should reduce unnecessary starter replacements and associated warranty claims.
Engine starting system warranty claims now require a completed Starter Checklist, a Battery Pack Midtronics
Report, and a Cable Drop Midtronics Report. Claims filed without these documents may be denied.

Condition
Unnecessary starter replacements can result from customer complaints regarding engine starting issues. A new
Starter Troubleshooting Guide has been created to provide a comprehensive list of starting system checks, which
should reduce unnecessary starter replacements and associated warranty claims.

All Peterbilt models excluding BEV

Information Only
Chassis conditions potentially caused by a failed or failing starter can also be caused by other starting system
components. Review and follow the supplemental diagnostic procedure to determine root cause of the customer’s
starting concern.

Warranty
Claim requirements will be effective with repair order dates of 11/22/2024.
Claims for starter replacement will require a completed Starter Checklist, a passed battery pack Midtronics report,
and a passed cable drop Midtronics report.
Review the Starter Troubleshooting Guide Procedure for examples.
Warranty claims filed for a starter may be denied if the required attachments are not included in the claim.
When filing a warranty claim, use the following SRT(s) for the battery pack and cable drop tests with DSS-5000 and

the starter Integrated Magnetic Switch (IMS) test.
• 32-040 – 0.1 hours – System test: perform starter diagnosis for DSS-5000 starter service system test.
• 32-041 – 0.1 hours – Remote starter switch: Attach remote stater switch for starter Integrated Magnetic Switch
(IMS) test .
Please note the tests will only be covered under warranty if there is a warrantable product failure. Tests should not
be performed proactively.

Parts
No parts are needed for the Starter Troubleshooting Guide.

Background
Insufficient engine starting system troubleshooting has resulted in many unnecessary starter replacements. More
in-depth, root cause diagnostics have been created to prevent unnecessary parts replacement and to reduce
warranty costs.
