Introduction
Peterbilt
Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model year 2007 and 2008 vehicles built between January
4, 2006 and April 30, 2007 and manufactured with a Dana SPL170XL interaxle driveshaft. Affected vehicles may experience premature failure of the
interaxle driveshaft universal joint due to excessive heat and a breakdown of lubrication, which may result in the universal joint becoming loose and/or

binding. If left unattended, the condition may result in universal joint failure, allowing the interaxle driveshaft to detach from the axle which could increase
the risk of personal injury, vehicle damage and/or a crash.
Resolution
Peterbilt Motors is issuing this recall to install new universal joints and, when applicable, phase the yoke of the interaxle driveshaft.
Phasing DOES NOT apply to vehicles with Meritor axles. See the attached list for vehicles with Meritor axles.
Federal Law
It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease new vehicles covered by this recall until the defect or noncompliance has been corrected.
Warranty
SIR will indicate chassis involved in this field repair with the designator “1210F” in the campaign field.
If the vehicle is affected and is shown to have an open campaign, please complete the work and file a Full Truck Claim.

EQUIPPED WITH AFTERMARKET DRIVELINE (Part Numbers: 170IA55010C or 170SC55012C)
1.7 hours to R&R both driveline universal joints, replace driveline boot (5015106DAN) and phase the driveline yoke per repair procedure. Use
Recommended Repair 1210F4.
For supplemental repairs file a long form claim and input 1210F in the "Campaign Code" field.
File claim within 7 days in accordance with warranty policy.

Procedure
For Meritor axles the repair ONLY involves replacing both interaxle driveline u-joints, and bearing retainers.
For Dana axles the repair involves replacing both interaxle driveline u-joints, bearing retainers and boot kit, as well as phasing the driveline slip yoke.
For all axle brands perform all repairs per normal repair practices (ref. attached Dana DSSM-0100 Service Manual).
The procedure below applies ONLY to Dana axles:
1. Clean the driveshaft to avoid contamination of the spline shaft during this repair.
2. Mark the interaxle driveline with "phasing marks".
3. Remove the u-joint on one end of the driveline, and the boot.

on the phasing marks you made in Step 1. Reassemble the two driveline sections, using a new u-joint assembly, a new boot and new boot
clamps. Tighten the boot clamps using Oeitikar pliers.
Phased driveline should look similar to this when complete.
6. Raise one of the axles off of the ground so that the axle yoke can be rotated to match the newly phased yoke.
7. Replace the u-joint on the other end of the driveline.
