Purpose
This document refers to oil seals that were incorrectly installed in certain heavy duty axles. Original
equipment manufacturers will notify dealers and end users by sending letters containing a list of potentially
affected products and associated serial numbers. Inspect the axle identification tag on the rear of the axle
beam for any affected serial numbers. All affected axles will need to have the oil seals replaced. See details
below for inspection of the axle identification tag and proper replacement of oil seals when needed.
If damage to the axle, hub or spindle is found, contact Lippert Care Center for further instructions.
Safety
This document provides general instructions. Many variables can change the circumstances of any
procedure, i.e. the degree of difficulty involved in the service operation and the ability level of the individual
performing the operation. This document cannot begin to plot out procedures for every possibility, but will
provide the general instructions for effectively installing, removing or servicing the system. In the event the
skill level required is too advanced or the procedure too difficult, a certified technician should be consulted
before performing the necessary operation. Failure to correctly install, remove or service the system may
result in voiding the warranty, inflicting injury or even death.

Axle Inspection and Identification
NOTE: To determine if an axle is affected, examine the axle identification tag (Fig. 1) located on the rear of
the axle beam. Reference the Serial #, (Fig. 1A) and cross reference it with the list provided by the
OEM. To find more information about the axle and its nomenclature, scan the QR code or click on

Seal Replacement Preparation
1. Lift and support unit per manufacturer's requirements.
Always lift the trailer by its frame and never by its axle or suspension. Axle and suspension
components are not designed, or rated, for the dead weight, point-of-contact loads that the trailer's
frame is. Do not go under the trailer unless it is supported by appropriately-rated jack stands.
Improperly supported trailers can collapse, causing possible serious personal injury or death.
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when performing service or maintenance
operations. Always wear eye protection when servicing trailer axles, brakes, hubs, springs and
wheels. Not using PPE may result in serious personal injury or death.
12-16k Seal Replacement Procedure
1. Remove the lug nuts from the wheel and set aside.
NOTE: If using an impact driver, ensure the driver has come to a complete stop before moving to the next
lug nut to avoid rounding the edges of the nut.

2. Remove the wheel from the axle hub and set aside.
3. Unscrew the oil cap using a 2 %” socket. Let oil drain into pan.
4. Remove the cotter pin, spindle nut, spindle washer and outer bearing.

NOTE: The cotter pin is a one-time use part. Do NOT re-use.
5. Using a hub puller, remove hub/drum assembly from axle spindle.

NOTE: Once the hub is pulled, the oil seal must be replaced regardless if it was installed correctly or not.
6. Useaseal puller to remove oil seal.
7. Clean the seal bore and axle spindle shaft before re-assembly.

NOTE: Be sure to orientate the seal correctly before installation (Fig. 3). There is an OIL SIDE and an AIR SIDE
to the oil seal. Some seals only have the words OIL SIDE marked on it and others only have AIR SIDE
marked on it. OIL SIDE must go into the hub bore first and face the inner bearing. The AIR SIDE
(Fig. 3A) needs to face the open side of the brake drum and be legible after seal install.

8. Install the new seal using a seal driver of proper size. Press in the seal until it bottoms out in the seal
bore, see (Fig. 4). See (Fig. 5) for a correctly installed oil seal.
9. Apply a light film of oil to the spindle journals and to the inside of the seal.

10. Install the hub-drum assembly.
11. Install the outer bearing, spindle washer and spindle nut.
12. Tighten the spindle nut to 50-ft-Ibs to seat the hub drum assembly onto the spindle.

13. Loosen the nut without rotating the hub until the torque goes to zero.
14. Hand tighten the nut as the critical final bearing adjustment step.
15. Install the new cotter pin in either of the two holes in the end of the spindle.
NOTE: Two holes are provided to minimize bearing clearance during adjustment.
16. Bend the cotter pin around the nut and be sure the ends of the cotter pin will not come in contact with
the oil cap.
17. Install the oil cap, torque to 30 ft-lbs.
18. Refill hub with 80-90W gear oil to fill line on the face of the cap. Allow the oil to settle and refill as
necessary until the level stabilizes.
Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when using caustic materials. Aerosol, liquid and oil-
based paste materials can present splash hazards and skin contact environments that can result in
serious adverse eye and skin irritations. Follow all recommended safety precautions when using
such materials.
Do not mix lithium, calcium, sodium or barium complex greases. Mixing of these incompatible
compounds can create a corrosive and/or toxic chemical with fumes that can result in a serious
health risk if exposed to skin or lungs. When converting from one grease to another, make sure all
old grease is removed completely prior to applying new grease.
Recommended Oil Lube for axle bearings:
Oil designation : SAE 90, SAE 80W-90, SAE 75W-90

19. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Tighten all lug nuts to vehicle manufacturer's recommended
torque range.
