INTRODUCTION
Nissan is conducting this voluntary safety recall campaign on certain specific model year
2005-2012 Pathfinder, and 2005-2013 Frontier and Xterra vehicles to inspect and, if
necessary, replace the Driver Air Bag Cover. This service will be performed at no charge to
the customer for parts or labor.
IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
Nissan has assigned identification number PC945 and PC948 to this campaign. This
number must appear on all communication and documentation of any nature dealing with
this campaign.
DEALER RESPONSIBILITY
It is the dealer’s responsibility to check Service COMM or Dealer Business Systems (DBS)
National Service History for the campaign status on each vehicle falling within the range of
this voluntary safety recall which for any reason enters the service department. This
includes vehicles purchased from private parties or presented by transient (tourist) owners
and vehicles in a dealer’s inventory. Federal law requires that new vehicles in dealer
inventory which are the subject of a safety recall must be corrected prior to sale.
Failure to do so can result in civil penalties by the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration. While federal law applies only to new vehicles, Nissan strongly
encourages dealers to correct any used vehicles in their inventory before they are retailed.
Bulletins are intended for use by qualified technicians, not 'do-it-yourselfers'. Qualified technicians are
properly trained individuals who have the equipment, tools, safety instruction, and know-how to do a job
properly and safely. NOTE: If you believe that a described condition may apply to a particular vehicle, DO
NOT assume that it does. See your Nissan dealer to determine if this applies to your vehicle.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Remove the Driver Air Bag Module Assembly from the Vehicle
To avoid the risk of death or severe personal injury, follow all cautions, warnings, and notes
in the ESM when working on or near a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), such as an
air bag.

Handle interior trim carefully to avoid damage. Work with clean hands and clean tools to
avoid dirt and stains. Use protective covers as needed.

Write down the radio settings.

Turn the ignition OFF.

3.

Disconnect both battery cables, negative cable first.

4.

Wait at least 3 minutes.

5.

Remove the Driver Air Bag Module assembly.


Refer to the ESM: H: RESTRAINTS > SR – SRS Airbag > REMOVAL AND
INSTALLATION > DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE > Removal and Installation

Attach the Quick Scan Tool to a CONSULT PC’s USB port.

Open ASIST on the CONSULT PC.

On the left side of the ASIST main menu, select TECH SUPPORT INFO, and then
select Bulletin Support Items.

Select CLICK HERE… next to PC944/PC945/PC946/ PC947/PC948/PC949 –
DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE.

Driver Air Bag
Module’s serial
number barcode

Locate the serial number barcode on
the side of the Driver Air Bag Module,
where shown in Figure 4.
HINT:
If the Driver Air Bag Module has two
(2) different labels, locate the label
that appears similar to the label in
Figure 4.

Enter the Dealer Code, and then using the Quick Scan Tool, scan the bar code above
the Driver Air Bag Module’s serial number.
HINT:
o Make sure the serial number label is clean.
o Hold the Quick Scan Tool about six (6) inches away from the serial number
label.
o Hold down the trigger until the Quick Scan Tool is finished scanning the serial
number label.
o Some serial number labels may not scan quickly.
o If needed, the serial number can be entered manually.
o If the serial number label is missing from the Driver Air Bag Module, enter
“MISSINGLABEL” into the Serial Number box in the ASIST tool.

Once the Serial Number field is populated, verify the serial number entered in the
box matches the serial number on the Driver Air Bag Module, and then select Submit.


If the result is NG (Figure 5), proceed to step 13 on page 7 to remove and replace
the Driver Air Bag Module Cover with the part listed in the ASIST tool.



If the result is OK, check for the presence of the Driver Air Bag Cover emblem
(Figure 6).
o

If the Driver Air Bag Cover Emblem is present, the Driver Air Bag Cover does
not require replacement; skip to step 32 on page 16 to reinstall the Driver Air
Bag Module.

o

If the Driver Air Bag Cover Emblem is NOT present, obtain the information
below and send to: FQA_inspection_support@nissan-usa.com


Take one clear digital photo of the repair order and the missing Driver Air
Bag Cover Emblem (both in the same photo)



Remove the Driver Air Bag Cover
IMPORTANT: Be careful not to damage the Driver Air Bag Module during Driver Air Bag
Cover removal, as the supply of replacement Driver Air Bag Modules is limited and
replacement requires authorization under this campaign.

Using a pair of suitable side cutters, cut the plastic hoop wall of the Driver Air Bag
Cover diagonally to the bottom of the Driver Air Bag Module housing hook, as shown
in Figure 7.
IMPORTANT: The Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks are fragile. Be careful not to
apply any unnecessary force to the Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks.

Using a pair of suitable needle nose pliers, grab and pinch the cut hoop wall plastic
next to the Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks and twist counter-clockwise to
remove the cut plastic from under the Driver Air Bag Module housing hook, as shown
in Figure 8.

plastic material is out of the way of the

Place the Driver Air Bag Module
assembly on a clean, flat, cloth
covered surface, and then lift the
Driver Air Bag Cover off the Driver Air
Bag Module.

Inspect the Driver Air Bag Module for Damage

Inspect the emblem inside of the removed Driver Air Bag Cover.


If both emblem post heads and metal clip are present, proceed to step 18 on
page 10.



If any of the emblem post heads or metal clip are missing, inspect the Driver Air
