DESCRIPTION
Symptom 1:
Some customers may complain about hearing a grinding noise and/or vibration occur when applying the brake. This is
due to rust on the rear brake disc plate. The brake pad has insufficient disc-rust prevention performance, resulting in the
disc plate rusting. To eliminate this concern, the pad material has been improved to prevent rust on the disc surface.
Symptom 2:
Some vehicles may exhibit a squeal noise from the rear brakes when braking lightly while driving at a slow speed. The
squeal noise is caused by the disc pad surface fluctuating.
NOTE:
• For Symptom 2, this TSB is not applicable if GEPC shows PAD SET, RR CALIPER DFZ5-26-43ZA for the subject
VIN.

• Refer to SA-016/24 - (BRAKE NOISE, JUDDER AND DRAGGING DIAGNOSIS AND SERVICING) if brake noise
continues after repair is completed.
Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
Symptom 1:
1. Verify the customer concern of grinding noise and/or vibration.
2. Check the disc surface to see if the cause of noise and vibration is the disc’s rust (Some areas of the surface have
fallen off due to rust and are too thin, which may look like black stains on the surface). If rust is the cause of the noise or
vibration when applying the brakes, lathe the discs or replace them with new ones and replace the brake pads.
NOTE:
• Check the disc thickness using a micrometer before lathing, if the thickness is below 8.7 mm for 2WD or 9.7 mm
for AWD, replace the disc with new ones (DO NOT lathe). Measure the thickness in the relatively less rusted area
where the pads are hitting but not in the severely rusted area.
• Disc replacement is acceptable if an on-car lathe is not available.

Sample case: If lathe is not applicable.
Some areas of the surface have fallen off due to rust and are too thin.

NOTE: Measure the thickness at the least rusted area.

3. After lathing the disc, re-measure the disc thickness. Replace the discs if the thickness is below the machining limit of
7.8 mm for 2WD and 8.8 mm for AWD as well as the brake pads. Refer to the instructions on MGSS online:

4. Verify the repair.
NOTE: Refer to SA-016/24 - (BRAKE NOISE, JUDDER AND DRAGGING DIAGNOSIS AND SERVICING) if brake noise
continues after repair is completed.
Symptom 2:
1. Verify the customer concern of a squeal noise.
2. Replace the discs if the thickness is below the machining limit of 7.8 mm for 2WD and 8.8 mm for AWD as well as the
brake pads. Refer to the instructions on MGSS online listed in Symptom 1.
NOTE: Replace both sides (left and right) of the rear brake pads with modified parts.
3. Verify the repair.
