AXLES AND SUSPENSION
Purpose
This document outlines the procedures to align the heavy duty slipper suspension system for efficient trailer
operation, to prevent excessive tire wear and to prevent off tracking and hard pulling.
Safety
Read and understand all instructions before installing or operating this product. Adhere to all safety labels.

The trailer MUST be supported per manufacturer's recommendations before working
underneath. Failure to do so may result in death, serious personal injury, severe product and/or
property damage.

Always lift the trailer by its frame and never by its axle or suspension. Axle and suspension
components are not designed, or rated, for the dead weight, point-of-contact loads that the trailer's
frame is. Do not go under the trailer unless it is supported by appropriately-rated jack stands.
Improperly supported trailers can collapse, causing possible serious personal injury or death.
Moving parts can pinch, cut or crush. Keep clear and use caution.

Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when performing service or maintenance
operations. Always wear eye protection when servicing trailer axles, brakes, hubs, springs and
wheels. Not using PPE may result in personal injury.

Prior To Alignment Procedure
1. Make make sure the trailer is unloaded.
2. Free the suspension of any binds by pushing the trailer backward and then pulling the trailer forward.
3. While pulling the trailer forward on a level floor, apply the brakes and release. This will ensure that an
adjustable undercarriage is in its rearmost locked position.
4. Ensure the kingpin or coupler are at the correct height.
NOTE: The trailer MUST be level from side to side as well as from front to rear.
NOTE: Neither service nor parking brakes should be applied during the measurement procedure.
NOTE: Use axle end extenders (or remove outer wheels and any obstructions) to achieve a straight line for
measuring from kingpin or coupler to the axle ends or axle centers.
Alignment
Adjusting
1. Loosen the adjustable track rod clamp nuts at each end of the adjusting bolts so the adjusting rod can
rotate (Fig. 1).
2. Turn the center rod to adjust as necessary based on the measurements taken. See Measurement
section.
3. Align front axle with the kingpin or coupler then adjust the rear axle parallel to the front axle. See
Measurement section.

Measurement
Use Fig. 2 for measurement illustrations.
NOTE: Always measure to the front axle ends for accurate alignment.
NOTE: Avoid measuring to rims, suspension brackets, hub cap, vent holes or brake drums. This could result
in improper alignment. For accurate measurements, use axle extenders.

NOTE: Always align any succeeding axles to the front axle, not to the kingpin or coupler.

1. Measure E (LATERAL CENTERLINE): Determine E lateral centerline of trailer body and axles by
measuring distance E between trailer and axle centerlines first. Correct so distance E is 1/4" or less for
each axle.

2. Measure A B (THRUST ANGLE): Measure distances A (curbside) then B (roadside) from the kingpin or
coupler to the front of the axle extension or axle centers. A B must be equal within 0.1 degree or 1/8" of
each other (A = B + 1/8”). Ensure the lateral tension (pulling force) applied to the measuring tape is the
same for both A and B measurements. Use a tensioning device scale or optical laser to ensure accuracy.

3. Measure C D (SCRUB ANGLE): Measure distances C (curbside) then D (roadside) between axles,
measuring from front of axle extension to front of axle extension or axle center to center. Adjust the
rear axle so it aligns to the front axle. C D also must be equal within 1/16" of each other (C = D + 1/16").
This measurement should be as close to zero as possible; the smaller the offset, the lower the rolling
resistance and the better the fuel economy.

Tighten Nuts After Adjustment
Follow all torque requirements. Do not use any component with visibly worn or damaged threads.
Failure to follow these safety alerts can lead to loss of vehicle control, property damage, serious
personal injury or death.
1. After an initial break-in period — approximately 1,000 miles — and at least every four months
periodically thereafter, all bolts and nuts should be checked to ensure that recommended torque
values are being maintained.
NOTE: Oiled torque values listed are for newer fasteners with lubricated threads. It is recommended that
new installations be performed with oiled fasteners. For dry threads which have been in service, use
higher torque values which are noted below.
2. Recheck measurements and readjust as needed.
