Front Seat Symptom - Noises from the Area of the Seat Backrest: Rework Upholstery
Support and Backrest Cover (SY 41/24)

Concerns:

Front seat left and/or right

Symptom:

The customer complains about different creaking and/or squeaking noises from the backrest
area and the seat.
These noises are intensified when the front seat is occupied and under the influence of cold outside
temperatures.

Cause:

Rework contact points between backrest frame, seat cushion/backrest cushion and backrest cover.

Action:

If there is a customer complaint, rework the front seat.

Preparatory work
Information
Contrary to the procedure described in the Workshop Manual, the seat cover on the backrest and the
upholstery support do not have to be completely removed.

Information
The actions for eliminating noise are described on a front seat and, if the fault pattern also applies, must
be carried out in the same way on the second front seat of the vehicle.
Work Procedure: 1

If necessary, verify the error pattern as follows:
Creaking noise on seat cushion  Verify fault -1- :
•

Apply pressure on the seat cushion vertically with a flat hand and check whether there are any
creaking noises  Verify fault -Arrow A-

Creaking noise in the shoulder area  Verify fault -2-:
•

Twist the seat backrest in both directions and pay attention to creaking noises  Verify fault
-Double arrow B-

Creaking noise on backrest cover lower  Verify fault -3- :

Sit in the front seat and apply pressure on the backrest with the upper body reclined, paying
attention to creaking / cracking noises  Verify fault -Arrow C-

Move front seat to the topmost and rearmost position.

If necessary, drain the air from the lumbar support and from the side bolsters of the front seat.
To do this, operate the respective control unit on the front seat until the end position is reached (bolt
support and side bolsters completely emptied).

Only relevant for vehicles with the following equipment: Rear Seat Entertainment (M-no. 9WF)

Remove front seat.
 Workshop Manual '720119 Removing and installing front seat'

Install front seat to seat assembly device VAS 6136
- holder for seat repair Front seat on assembly
fixtureand put it into position to work on the underside
of the seat.
If there is no seat assembly device, carefully place
the front seat on a suitable work surface to work on
the underside of the seat.

Release seat cover for backrest on backrest cover.

Unhook seat cover on the bottom  Seat
cover on backrest, bottom -1- using a
suitable tool from the backrest cover  Seat
cover on backrest, bottom -2-.

7.3

Unhook the lower corner of  Release seat
cover for backrest on backrest cover -1- the
backrest seat cover using suitable tools on
both sides of the front seat.

Unhook seat cover on both sides of the front
seat from below, starting from the backrest
