Technical Background
Excess flux from the aluminum cooling system components (EA189 TDI engine CKRA) contaminates the
cooling system. This over time causes a high acidic concentration in the coolant. The result is oxide
particles (aluminum rust) and excess flux restricting the heater core. The engine control module may also
set EGR Recirculation Cooler efficiency fault.

Do not perform additional diagnosis for this fault before performing the service procedure.

Production Solution
2.0L (CKRA) engine no longer produced.

Service
P2457 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Efficiency Below Threshold
If the vehicle has fault P2457 check the inlet and outlet side temperature of the EGR cooler and the heater
core. If there is a substantial difference in temperature perform the cooling system cleaning procedure.
Cooling system cleaning procedure:
In order to restore the cooling system to normal specification the coolant must be removed with the
following procedure to remove the contaminants and restore the coolant to the proper PH level and
coolant percentage for optimal protection.

It is necessary to remove all hoses described in the Elsa repair procedure steps.
 Replacing only the heater core will result in the vehicle returning with the same condition. It is
essential to perform the coolant removal procedure.
1. Drain the coolant, see Repair Group 19 in Elsa.
2. Refill cooling system using a 50/50 mixture of coolant & distilled water.
3. Start the engine, bring it to operating temperature and let engine idle for 5 minutes.
4. Repeat step 1 and drain coolant, see Repair Group 19 in Elsa.
5. Replace the heater core, see Repair Group 19 in Elsa.
6. Refill cooling system using a 50/50 mixture of coolant & distilled water.
