Turn Signal May Not Automatically Cancel

MODELS:

2013 Cadillac XTS

This service update involves vehicles in dealer inventory only. All involved vehicles that
are in dealer inventory must be held and not delivered to customers, dealer traded, or
used for demonstration purposes until the repair contained in this bulletin has been
performed on the vehicle.
PURPOSE
This bulletin provides a service procedure to secure a wiring harness in position using butyl
tape on certain 2013 model year Cadillac XTS vehicles. The turn signal on these vehicles may
not automatically cancel when completing a turn.
This service procedure should be completed on involved vehicles currently in dealership
inventory as soon as possible.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
All involved vehicles are identified by VIN in the Global Warranty Management System –
Investigate Vehicle History Application. Dealership technicians should always check this site to
confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs. It is
important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be
involved regardless of description or option content.
Additionally, a list of involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory is available on the “Service
Update Bulletin Information” link under the “Service” tab in GM GlobalConnect (US) or attached
to the GlobalConnect message (Canada) used to release this bulletin.

Note: The steering column wiring harness may be causing the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) to
interfere with the self-cancel mechanism of the turn signal. If the wiring harness (1) is routed on
the outboard side of the column trim mounting pedestal (2), it may put strain on the 6 way SAS
connector (3) causing the SAS to interfere with the turn signal cancel pawl. This interference
cannot be seen. It is on the steering wheel side of the SAS. Refer to the service procedure
below to reposition the steering column wiring harness and relieve the strain on the 6-way
connector.
1. Remove the steering column lower trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Lower Trim Cover
Replacement in SI.

2. Locate the steering column wiring harness connected to the 6-way Steering Angle Sensor
(SAS) connector.

Caution: Ensure the steering column wiring harness is positioned such that it does not put
tension or slack on the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) at the connector. Any load on the SAS
may cause a noise or accelerated wear within the sensor.
Note: Ensure the vehicle engine is off. It may be necessary to disconnect the 6-way SAS
connector. If the connector is disconnected, the steering angle sensor will lose communication.
This communication will re-establish itself when the vehicle is driven.
3. Position the steering column wiring harness (2) to the inboard side of the column electrical
assembly (CEA) mounting pedestal (or right hand side from the center of the column
assembly) as shown in the ‘B’ portion of the photograph. This step is required to route the
harness in its natural form on the right hand side first.
4. Roll a 12mm (1/2 in.) piece of Kent Industries butyl tape or an equivalent butyl tape into a
marble size ball.

5. Install the butyl (1) tape at the base of the column electrical assembly (CEA) mounting
pedestal on the right hand/inboard side as shown in the 'A' portion of the photograph.
6. With the steering column wiring harness in the correct position, push the wire bundle into
the butyl material (1) to keep the harness in position during re-installation of steering column
lower trim cover. Refer to the 'B' portion of the photograph.
7. Reinstall the steering column lower trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Lower Trim Cover
Replacement in SI.
8. Road test the vehicle to verify the turn signals self-cancel and to re-establish the steering
angle sensor communication.
