General Information
Daimler Truck North America LLC, on behalf of its DETROITTM Powertrain Division, is initiating Emission Recall
Campaign D23R4 to modify the vehicles mentioned above.
DETROITTM Model Year 2021 and Model Year 2022, DD16® engines will require MCM reprogramming to minimum
versions of software and fuel maps listed below. The ACM and CPC may need flashing for compatibility.
•
MCM Software Version 6.9.0.2 with fuel maps ending in ZGS 003
Compatible Software:
• ACM Software Version 7.61.1.0 w/ fuel maps ending in ZGS 003
• CPC Software Version:
o R20.31.00.00A or,
o R20.41.00.00A or,
o R20.51.00.00A
• TCM Software Version NAMT201403
DETROITTM Model Year 2021 and Model Year 2022, DD16® engines, built from October 2021 through October 2022
will require the latest MCM fuel maps to correct 06N04C Application Group calibrations. MCM 6.9.0.2, with the above
fuel maps ZGS, are the certified fuel maps for these Model Year 2021 and Model Year 2022 DD16® engines. The
06N04C Application Group corrections became available in November 2022. The CPC and ACM may require
reprogramming for compatibility.
There are approximately 1,185 engines affected by this emission recall in U.S. and Canada.
Any engines, already reprogrammed, are excluded from this Emission Recall Campaign. Note that current software
levels may be higher than the minimum levels shown above.
Additional Repairs
Dealers must complete all outstanding Recall and Field Service campaigns prior to the sale or delivery of a vehicle.
A Dealer will be liable for any progressive damage that results from its failure to complete campaigns before sale or
delivery of a vehicle. Owners may be liable for any progressive damage that results from failure to complete
campaigns within a reasonable time after receiving notification. Please contact Warranty Campaigns for
consideration of additional charges prior to performing the repair.

Your vehicle may be equipped with software that violates (California and/or Federal) standards and regulations.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has determined that your engine/equipment may be emitting
pollutants in excess of the federal emission standards (and/or California standards) as defined in Title 40 of the
Code of Federal Regulations. These emission standards protect the public health and welfare from air pollution.
To ensure your full protection, by federal/state law, under the emission warranty on your engine/equipment, and
your right to participate in future recalls, we recommend you service your engine/equipment as soon as possible.
Failure to do so can be considered improper maintenance.
Your vehicle may be releasing air pollutants, which exceed California and Federal standards. The condition, if not
repaired, may cause the vehicle or engine to fail a vehicle inspection or Smog Check test when such tests are
required under state law. The condition does not cause any adverse effect on performance, fuel economy, nor
durability of the vehicle or engine.
Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA), on behalf of its DETROITTM Powertrain Division, is initiating Emission
Recall D23R4 to modify model year 2021 and model year 2022, DD16® engines manufactured between October
2021 and October 2022. The recall will be performed at the expense of the manufacturer.
Note that trucks, already reprogrammed, are excluded from this recall. Records indicate that your vehicle has one
of the affected engines. Instructions for this Emission Recall have been sent to your local DTNA Authorized
Facility and the labor time required to perform this is approximately 0.7 hours.
Please contact a DTNA authorized repair facility to arrange to have the emission recall campaign performed. To
locate an authorized facility, search online at https://demanddetroit.com/find-a-dealer
If you reside in the State of California, a Proof of Correction form will be provided to you by the service facility
upon completion of the repair. Please retain it as it may be requested by the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles)
in order to register your vehicle.
Please understand that the California DMV will reject vehicle registration renewals if this emission related recall
has not been completed.
In order to ensure your full protection under the emission warranty provisions, it is recommended that you have
your engine serviced as soon as possible. Failure to do so could be determined as a lack of proper maintenance
of your engine.
You may be liable for any progressive damage that results from failure to complete campaigns within a
reasonable time after receiving notification.

have this recall condition corrected prior to this notice, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement. Requests
for reimbursement may include parts and labor. Reimbursement may be limited to the amount the repair would
have cost if completed by a DTNA authorized repair facility.
The following documentation must be presented to your dealer for consideration for reimbursement. Please
provide original or clear copies of all receipts, invoices, and repair orders that show:

Subject: Emission Recall D23R4 DETROIT™ DD16® ACM Software
Reprogramming
This notice was sent to you in accordance with the requirements of Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA),
1999. Engines registered in Canada will require reprogramming to a minimum software and fuel map version.
Your vehicle or engine may be releasing air pollutants, which exceed California and Federal standards. This repair does
not adversely affect the performance, fuel economy, nor durability of the vehicle or engine. These engines cannot be
operated in the State of California if the recall is not completed once made available.
The software and fuel maps were released for service beginning in January 2023. Canadian Environmental Protection
Act (CEPA), 1999, California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) regulations
require that software and fuel maps meet certain criteria. Reprogramming the MCM corrects the fuel maps to a certified
version.
Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA), on behalf of its DETROITTM Powertrain division, is initiating emission recall
D23R4 to modify specific DD16® engines manufactured between October 2021 and October 2022. The recall will be
completed at the expense of the manufacturer.
Certain DETROITTM DD16® engines will require reprogramming to a minimum software and fuel map version.
Note that trucks already reprogrammed are excluded from this recall. Records indicate that your vehicle has one of these
qualifying engines, which will require reprogramming the latest software and fuel maps. The procedure will be completed
at no cost to you when performed by a DTNA authorized repair facility and will be at the expense of Daimler Truck North
America LLC (DTNA) DETROITTM Powertrain division. The scheduled time for the software update is approximately 0.7
hours.
Please contact a DTNA authorized repair facility to arrange to have the emission recall campaign performed. To locate

Work Instructions
Subject: Emission Recall D23R4 Detroit™ DD16® MCM Software
Reprogramming
Models Affected: DD16 (473.910)
Corrective Procedure
1. Apply parking brake, chock wheels, and perform any other applicable safety steps.
Note: You MUST use DiagnosticLink® Professional 8.17 with Service Pack 1 (or higher) when reprogramming.
2. Begin the process by connecting DiagnosticLink® to the vehicle. Make sure that the modules, ACM, CPC
MCM, and TCM (if equipped) are connected.
NOTICE:
BEFORE beginning reprogramming, make sure the VIN is correct in the modules, ACM, CPC, MCM,
and TCM (if equipped). If the VIN is not correct in these modules, you will get an error message when
attempting to reprogram.
3. Make sure the VIN is correct in all modules, ACM, CPC, MCM, and TCM (if equipped), by looking at the
“Identification” screen in DiagnosticLink®. If any VIN is incorrect, you can correct the VIN under the “Actions”
drop-down menu in DiagnosticLink® by selecting the “Check VIN Synchronization” item. Select “Start” from this
panel and follow the prompts. Follow all prompts to cycle the key until the routine completes. When
synchronization is complete, turn ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF) and continue the download process.
4. On the ‘Identification’ screen, check the current ACM software. Listed below is the MINIMUM level required.
See Figure 1 for an example of the ‘Identification’ screen.

5. MCM software 6.9.0.2 should have compatible Application Code 06N04C1606. If MCM software is
6.9.0.2 and Application Code shows 06N04C2261, re-flashing of the MCM will be needed. In the
‘Identification’ screen, does the Application Code for the MCM show 06N04C2261? For example, in
Figure 1, MCM software 6.9.0.2 with Application Code 06N04C2261, which is not the required
06N04C1606.
a) Yes, the application code is 06N04C2261. Go to step 6.
b) No, the application code is 06N04C1606. Programming is not necessary. Go to step 12.
6. Select ‘Program Device’ option along the left side of the DiagnosticLink® screen.
7. Select the ‘Add’ button in the lower left corner of the DiagnosticLink® screen and enter the engine serial number.
Then click the ‘Connect to Server’ button in the bottom left corner of the DiagnosticLink screen to continue the
download. Select ‘Connected unit’, then select ‘Next’. See Figures 2, 3 and 4.

8. Program the MCM based on the above inspection results and engine serial number listing included with this
Emission Recall Campaign. Note: The CPC and ACM may require reprogramming for compatibility.
9. When programming is complete, click the ‘Finish’ button and perform the following to allow the modules to
synchronize with each other:

Disconnect the USB Link at the 9-pin vehicle diagnostic port.
Turn the vehicle ignition OFF and wait one minute.
Turn the vehicle ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF) and wait one minute.
Turn the vehicle ignition OFF and wait one minute.
Turn the vehicle ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF) and wait one minute.
Reconnect the USB Link, reconnect DiagnosticLink to the MCM, ACM, CPC, and TCM (if
equipped) to confirm the proper software.
10. Update the server by clicking the ‘Connect to Server’ button in the bottom left corner of the
DiagnosticLink screen.
NOTICE:
CHECK with the customer if Auto Elevate can be enabled. Auto Elevate can prevent Aftertreatment
System (ATS) issues.
11. Ask the customer if they would like Auto Elevate activated. REFERENCE Detroit Technical Service
letter 16TS-18 for full details on Auto Elevate.
12. Install base label WAR259 (if not already present) and a blank, red completion sticker WAR260. See
Completion Stickers section.
13. Complete the Vehicle Emission-Proof of Correction.
