Condition

Some customers may comment on any number of the following conditions:
• No start
• Radio making a clicking noise, or inoperative
• MIL illuminated
• Various other electrical issues
• Smoke and/or Fire originating from trunk
The cause of the Condition may be water intrusion into the electrical components located
in the rear compartment area.

To determine the source of water intrusion, water test and inspect the following areas:
• Rear compartment lid weatherstrip area
• Rear body structure stop lamp pockets
• Rear body structure stop lamp foam missing
• Seams around rear window
• Sunroof drain hose disconnected or damaged
• Missing or not fully seated body plugs (2 plugs located below the rear window on
convertibles)
Note: If no water leaks are detected in any of the areas listed above, the water leak
could be caused by the deck lid not being fully closed, ice melting or liquids being spilled
inside the trunk area.
If the source of the water leak is determined to be caused by one of the above conditions,
repair the damaged/corroded wires and/or parts using the appropriate service
procedure(s) referring to Service Information (SI).
In addition, complete the Service Procedure outlined below.

Service Procedure
Important: Service agents must comply with all
International, Federal, State, Provincial, and/or
Local laws applicable to the activities it performs
under this bulletin, including but not limited to
handling, deploying, preparing, classifying,
packaging, marking, labeling, and shipping
dangerous goods. In the event of a conflict between
the procedures set forth in this bulletin and the
laws that apply to your dealership, you must follow
those applicable laws.
Repair damaged/corroded wires using appropriate
terminated leads. Refer to Wire to Wire Repair
(Document ID# 2161159) in SI for the instructions on
electrical repair.
Note: Adjust splice locations so that each splice is at
least 40 mm (1.5 in) away from the other splices,
harness branches, or connectors. If all wires are
repaired, it will be necessary to separate each
connector wire bundle into two bundles in order to
appropriately stagger all splices.

After the wire repair is complete, the harness should lay
in the original location.

Rewrap the wire harness bundles and reinstall.

2. From inside the trunk, using the 30 mm hole saw,
drill a hole in the trunk tub floor in the center
forward position between the forward body plugs.
3. Clean the area and apply SuperLube or equivalent
to the metal to protect it from corrosion.
Note: Be sure to use an applicator to apply protecting
product due to sharp edges.
4. From the underside of the vehicle, install the 30
mm drain plug (GM Part Number 39123504).
5. Reinstall the rear compartment trim.

Important: If the positive battery cable is damaged/
corroded, replace the cable. Do not attempt to repair
the positive battery cable.
To manage water that may enter the trunk area, install a
30 mm drain using the following procedure.
Important: If the vehicle is built after July 8, 2020, the
following installation steps do not need to be
completed. Verify that the drain located under the
Chassis control module is not obstructed in any way
and continue on to Step 5.
1. Remove the rear compartment floor panel trim
support. Refer to Rear Compartment Floor Panel
Trim Support Replacement in SI.

Catalog (GM EPC) for the appropriate part number(s).
