Customer statement:
• The message “Vehicle start system: fault. Please contact workshop” appears in the instrument cluster.
Workshop findings:
One or more of the following DTCs are stored in the engine control unit J623 (diagnostic address 0001) either as
static or intermittent:
• DTC P086D00: Neutral Position Sensor "A" Circuit High
• DTC P086E00: Neutral Position Sensor "A" Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

Technical Background
On vehicles manufactured within a specific period, the supply line to the gearbox neutral position sender G701
may be too short.

Production Solution
The length of the harness has been increased in production.

Service
Check the wiring at the gearbox neutral position sender G701 (Figure 1).
If one of the wires is damaged, repair all 3 wires using wire repair set VAS 1978 B.
