Dear Dealers,
We received some reports concerning the validation of errors P1074 (Exhaust butterfly valve
[Calibration - Maximum position not found]) and P0476 (Exhaust butterfly valve motor [Faulty
movement]), which are connected to exhaust butterfly valve opening system.
If these errors are validated, the MIL warning light illuminates and the engine control unit
could apply (depending on the engine ECU software installed) a "torque limitation" until the
next key-off.
Should this occur, the valve will no longer operate and the motor freezes at the position it was
in at the time of the error validation. In this case, we ask you NOT to replace the exhaust
butterfly valve motor, open a Youtech service request and follow the instructions below.
The defect may be caused by an incorrect position of the Bowden cable retaining bracket on
the exhaust silencer. In some cases, we have found that the bracket is too far away from the
motor pulley, creating a condition of limited travel.
To correct this condition procced as follows:
•

Report the complete error list found during the Global Scan; if proposed, carry out the
software update of the engine ECU; software calibration listed below, the torque limitation
in the event of an exhaust valve error has been removed.

Remove the left belly fairing cover and remove the exhaust butterfly valve motor without
removing the Bowden cable. Take a picture of the motor pulley to clearly show the
position found at the time of the fault (see example below).

Remove the complete silencer and check the position of the bracket.

Measure the distance between the center of the pulley and the Bowden cable support
bracket. Check that it is 36 ± 1 mm (be careful as taking this measurement must be precise).
If this value is not correct, assess whether it is possible to slightly bend the bracket
(normally in the direction of the pulley) to bring the gap back to the nominal value or
whether it is necessary to replace the complete silencer.

In any case, during removal and upon refitting, make sure that the plastic clip preventing
the sheath from falling out of the motor housing is present and in position, and that the
ring nut with reduction at the end of the sheath is in place and correctly fitted.

•

Verify the Bowden cable is within tolerance. Measure from the end of the sheath to the
cylinder retaining it to the pulley and/or valve and check that the length is 75.4 ± 1 mm.

•

We ask you to open a Youtech report regardless if you were able to repair the vehicle or
not.

The analysis of the above condition is under way and updates to this bulletin will follow.

To refit the complete silencer and exhaust butterfly valve motor, follow the instructions in
the Workshop Manual:
- Complete silencer → Sec.08 Fuel/Exhaust system -> Exhaust system
- Exhaust valve motor → Sec.06 Electrical system and engine management -> electrical
components: inspections -> exhaust valve motor

After reassembly, run a Global Scan and ensure that no errors are present. Then key on and
off twice with a 5-second pause between the cycles. This allows the BBS control unit to
recognize the maximum open position of the exhaust valve and run its check.
At the end of the two cycles, run a new Global Scan and ensure that no errors are present.
The labor time to perform the operation is
