Outer Body Symptom – Creaking in Rear End: Loosen and Tighten Rear Axle Housing

Concerns:

Rear axle housing

Symptom:

Customers complain about creaking in the rear end.

Cause:

After the first kilometers/ miles of driving, tensions can occur in the rear axle housing, which can cause
noise.

Remedial
Action:

In the event of a customer complaint, loosen the rear screws on the rear axle housing and then replace
and tighten individually one after the other.
Information
The rear axle housing screws must be replaced after each loosening.

Loosen and tighten rear axle housing screw
connections.
2.1

First loosen both rear screws on the rear axle
housing  Rear axle carrier housing screw
connection -1-, but do not remove them yet.

2.2

Then replace screws on the rear axle
housing  Rear axle carrier housing screw
connection -1- one after the other with new
screws and tighten them.
Initial tightening 115 Nm (84.8 ftlb.)
Rear axle carrier housing screw connection

Final tightening +90°

Lower the vehicle.
