General Information
Daimler Trucks North America LLC, on behalf of its DETROITTM Powertrain Division, is initiating Field
Service Campaign D23M3 to modify the vehicles mentioned above.
DETROIT™ GHG17 DD16® engines installed in certain vehicle applications require replacement of the
crankshaft vibration damper.
Some vehicles have experienced vibration damper failure that can result in belt issues, transmission
damage, or damage to the front cover of the engine. A new crankshaft vibration damper became effective
with engines manufactured in May 2022. The new crankshaft vibration damper utilizes an improved design
to reduce the failure mode described above.
There are approximately 671 engines affected by this Field Service Campaign.

Additional Repairs
Dealers must complete all outstanding Recall and Field Service campaigns prior to the sale or delivery of
a vehicle. A Dealer will be liable for any progressive damage that results from its failure to complete
campaigns before sale or delivery of a vehicle. Owners may be liable for any progressive damage that
results from failure to complete campaigns within a reasonable time after receiving notification. Please
contact Warranty Campaigns for consideration of additional charges prior to performing the repair.

Please refer to the attached work instructions. Prior to performing this field service campaign, check
the vehicle for a completion sticker (Form WAR261).

Campaign D23M3 to modify the vehicles mentioned above.
DETROIT™ GHG17 DD16® engines installed in certain vehicle applications will require replacement of the
crankshaft vibration damper. A new crankshaft vibration damper became effective with engines manufactured in
May 2022. The new crankshaft vibration damper uses an improved design to reduce service concerns
experienced with the previous design.
Records available to us indicate that your vehicle has one of the eligible engines. Instructions for this Field Service
Campaign have been sent to your local Daimler Truck Authorized Repair Facility and the labor time required to
perform this campaign is approximately 1.1 hours.
Please contact a Daimler Truck Authorized Repair Facility to arrange to have the Field Service Campaign
performed. To locate an authorized facility, search online at https://demanddetroit.com/find-a-dealer/
You must make an appointment with the repair facility at least two weeks in advance of the actual repair in
order for the repair facility to order and receive the required parts for the Field Service Campaign. Failure to
provide advance notification to the repair facility may result in a delayed repair.
This service will be completed for you at no charge, prior to June 16, 2024, under the provisions of this notice.
You may be liable for any progressive damage that results from failure to complete campaigns within a
reasonable time after receiving notification.

Vibration Damper Removal

PERSONAL INJURY
To avoid injury from hot surfaces, wear protective gloves, or allow engine to cool before removing any
component.

PERSONAL INJURY
To avoid injury before starting and running the engine, ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface,
parking brake is set, and the wheels are blocked.
1. Turn ignition OFF, apply parking brake, chock wheels, and perform any other applicable safety steps.

ELECTRICAL SHOCK
To avoid injury from electrical shock, use care when connecting battery cables. The magnetic switch
studs are at battery voltage.

Disconnect the batteries.
Open the hood.
If necessary, remove the bumper for access. Refer to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) procedures.
Install and lock engine barring tool (W904589046300) to prevent the crankshaft from rotating during vibration
damper mounting bolt removal.
6. Disconnect and remove the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) ducting at the turbocharger compressor outlet.
7. Remove the belt tensioner.
Refer to section "Removal of the Hydraulic Belt Tensioner" in the GHG17 Heavy Duty Workshop Manual
(DDC-SVC-MAN-0190).
Refer to section "Removal of the Friction Belt Tensioner" in the GHG17 Heavy Duty Workshop Manual
(DDC-SVC-MAN-0190).
8. Remove two of the vibration damper mounting bolts. On a Classic Cascadia, guide studs (J-43431) can be
used to ease removal of the vibration damper.

NOTICE:
Use caution when removing the vibration damper. It can be easily damaged if it falls and makes
contact.
9. Remove the remaining six mounting bolts (1) attaching the vibration damper (3) to the crankshaft (5). Carefully
remove the damper and torque plate (2).

New Vibration Damper Installation
11. Measure the vibration damper mounting bolts for reuse. The maximum allowable length for affected DD16
engines is 34.3 mm (1.350 in.). Replace as necessary.
12. Install and lock engine barring tool (W904589046300) to prevent the crankshaft from rotating while the vibration
damper mounting bolts are installed and tightened.
13. On a Classic Cascadia, guide studs (J-43431) can be installed into the crankshaft to ease installation of the
vibration damper.
14. Install the splash ring (1) with cup-side (2) toward the crankshaft.

NOTICE:

Carefully install the vibration damper.
If equipped with a torque plate, install the torque plate and loosely install six damper mounting bolts.
If used, remove the guide studs and install the remaining two damper mounting bolts.
Torque the vibration damper mounting bolts in a crisscross pattern to 200 N·m (147.5 lb·ft).
Remove the engine barring tool from the flywheel housing and install the cover plate.
Install the belt tensioner.
Refer to section "Installation of the Hydraulic Belt Tensioner" in the GHG17 Heavy Duty Workshop Manual
(DDC-SVC-MAN-0190).
Refer to section "Installation of the Friction Belt Tensioner" in the GHG17 Heavy Duty Workshop Manual (DDCSVC-MAN-0190).
21. Connect the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) ducting at the turbocharger compressor outlet. Refer to the Original
Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) procedure.
22. If removed, install the bumper. Refer to the OEM procedure.

23. Connect the batteries.

PERSONAL INJURY
To avoid injury before starting and running the engine, ensure the vehicle is parked on a level

ENGINE EXHAUST
To avoid injury from inhaling engine exhaust, always operate the engine in a well-ventilated area.
Engine exhaust is toxic.
24. Start the engine and inspect for proper belt alignment. Correct as necessary.
25. Close the hood.
26. Repairs are complete. Install completion sticker.

Completion Stickers


Upon completion of Recall Campaign D23M3, clean a spot on the base label (Form WAR259), write the
Field Service Campaign Number D23M3 on a blank, completion sticker (Form WAR261), and attach the
completion sticker to the base label.


