Issue Summary
Symptoms:
• Fault Code 553
• Fault Code 559
Root Cause:
• Fuel pump venturi orifice plug becomes dislodged causing fuel rail pressure to
increase and opening the fuel pressure relief valve.
• Excessive drain flow from the fuel pressure relief valve.
◦ The fuel pressure relief valve is not defective.
Verification
• Relieve the high-pressure fuel from the fuel rail. See corresponding Service Manual.
Reference Procedure 006-081 in Section 6.

• Remove threaded plug from the fuel pump body and inspect depth of venturi, see
Figure 1.
• Two possible conditions:
1. Drain hole visible / clearance between venturi and threads, see Figure 2.
◾ Repair procedure does not apply (Venturi is in correct position)
◾ Continue troubleshooting Fault Code 553. Reference the appropriate
Fault Code Troubleshooting procedure.
2. Drain hole is not visible / no clearance between venturi and threads, see
Figure 3.
◾ The high pressure fuel pump can be repaired by using repair methods
provided.

Resolution
Replace the existing threaded plug with new threaded plug part number to keep venturi
seated.
Service Instructions
Replace threaded plug with new threaded plug part number to keep venturi seated. See
Table 1 for part numbers.
Using new threaded plug, Part Number 5698264:

Install threaded plug to reseat venturi. 33.8 N•m [ 25 ft-lb ].
Remove threaded plug and verify venturi is in the correct position. See Figure 2.
Reinstall threaded plug 33.8 N•m [ 25 ft-lb ].
Validate the repair by operating the engine as outlined in the Conditions for Clearing
the Fault Code. Reference the Fault Code Overview.
