SITUATION
Exterior rear lights do not work.
This failure can affect either or both sides of the vehicle.

Note: This SIB does NOT apply to LCI (life cycle impulse, aka mid-generation refresh) vehicles which
are no longer equipped with taillight assemblies that have removal bulb holder housings.

CAUSE
Burnt pin in connector from wiring harness to rear lamp assembly bulb holder.

CORRECTION
Replace bulb holder and wiring harness connector, if damaged.

PROCEDURE
For conditions that are similar to the situation described:
1. Remove the rear light the vehicle according to REP 63 21 260 Removing and installing (replacing) left, rear light
(on side wall).
2. Disconnect the plug from the wiring harness to the affected rear light assembly.

3. Inspect the condition of the pins on the
harness connector and on the bulb holder.
Do any of the pins appear to be burnt?
YES- replace the bulb support according
to REP 63 21 030 Removing and
installing/replacing left socket housing for
rear light (on side wall) and wiring harness
connector then go to Step 4.
NO- continue diagnosis with the
assistance of ISTA.
Note: Without damage affecting its
operation, the rear light should not be
replaced.
4. Repeat procedure from Step 1 on the other side of the vehicle for the connectors of the other rear light assembly.
