DESCRIPTION:

This Technical Journal is for all engine variants.
Before diagnosing an oil consumption complaint, always check for external leakage on and around
the engine. Diagnose and repair these issues before starting an oil consumption test.
All vehicles must have an oil consumption test performed to validate excessive oil consumption prior
to further diagnosing of engine.
It is recommended to use tamper-proof tape that can be sourced locally to cover oil cap and drain
plug during consumption test. (see example)

IMPORTANT NOTE:
When repairing a customer’s vehicle for excessive oil consumption, first check to see if vehicle is
marked with Extended Warranty QB P10207 & P10186 or QB P10206 & P10183. If customer’s
vehicle is marked for extended warranty follow instructions in QB P10207 & P10186 or QB
P10206 & P10183.

SERVICE:
Perform prerequisite TJs if applicable at start of oil consumption test:
4 cylinder (VEP) engine, perform TJ 30087 if applicable.
5 cylinder engines , no prerequisite TJ
6 cylinder (SI6) engine, perform TJ 28530, 29332 or 30021 if applicable.
All engine variants then proceed with oil consumption test.
This test must be documented and followed within the guidelines of VIDA to be valid.
Profile Vehicle in VIDA, read out any diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) and type Oil Consumption in
the search to locate the test procedure.
VIDA Path:
Repair/ Cleaning, Inspection and Adjustment/ 2 Engine with mountings and equipment/ 22
lubricating and oil system/ 220 general/ oil consumption test

If no TJ’s are applicable and technical support is needed, the following information should be added to
a vehicle report in the first communication. This will help to eliminate the second response of additional
information needed and avoid delaying the proper repair to the customer vehicle.
