Summary

Introduction of 9832 Rapid Warmup and Output Brake Features.

NOTE: Former Converter Housing P/N 29537425 has been completely cancelled. Current Converter
Housing P/N 29563477 will be used for all service needs. When replacing Converter Housing
P/N 29537425 with Converter Housing P/N 29537427, also order Temperature Sensor P/N 15326309,
Temperature Sensor Bracket P/N 29533980, and Button Head Screw P/N 29542098.
The new transmission main valve body has a larger mounting surface for the new trimmer valve body design. To
enable control of the warmup and brake functions, two additional solenoids are installed to the solenoid mounting
plate at the “B” and “G” locations. Figure 2 shows the differences between a former valve body assembly and
a current valve body assembly.

Figure 2. Former (Left) and Current (Right) Main Control Valve Assemblies
The current trimmer valve body assembly includes a new valve, the splitter cut-off valve, that controls main
pressure flow to the splitter range clutches. The splitter cut-off valve and its spring located in the center, between
the two trimmer valves. Figure 3 shows the current trimmer valve body assembly in an exploded view.

A temperature sensor is now integrated into the torque converter housing to monitor the oil temperature in the
torque converter. The sensor is located on the rear of the torque converter housing near the retarder valve
body/cooler manifold mounting surface. The temperature sensor is held in place by a bracket and screw. Refer

The addition of the Converter Temperature Sensor requires an additional branch of the transmission external
harness to connect the sensor to the TCM. Allison Transmission, Inc. has made available a new transmission
external harness P/N 29562715 to support integration of the additional sensor to the Original Equipment
Manufacturer (OEM) wiring harness. The new harness Delta P switch branch has enough length to support either
direct mount or remote mount transmission main filter configurations.
For additional feature or hardware integration information, refer to Allison Tech Data located on the Allison HUBTM
or contact your Allison Customer Integration representative.

Service Procedures:
With the part changes to support Rapid Warmup and Output Brake, there are slight differences in the service
procedures for the torque converter housing assembly and the trimmer valve body assembly. Use the following
procedures for disassembly and assembly of the updated parts.
NOTE: Only service procedures that differ from the former 9832 are covered in this section, for any
service procedures not covered in this SIL refer to 9800 Series Service Manual (SM7449EN).
Converter Housing Assembly (refer to Figure 5):
Removal of Converter Temperature Sensor
1. Remove the button-head screw (48) and bracket (49).
2. Carefully remove the converter temperature sensor (46) from the converter housing (13).
Installation of Converter Temperature Sensor
1. Carefully install the converter temperature sensor (46) into the converter housing (13). Orient the sensor in
the housing so the electrical connector is facing down.

2. Remove one ¼-20 x 1 inch bolt (234) and lockwasher (233) from each end of cover (232) (refer to Figure 7).
Install a ¼-20 x 5 inch threaded rod, washer and running nut into each hole to control the removal of the
cover (232).
3. Remove the eight remaining bolts (234) and lockwashers (233) from cover (232).
4. Alternatively and evenly turn the nuts counterclockwise to remove the cover plate.
5. Remove the threaded rods, washers, running nuts and cover (232). Remove and discard the gasket (231).

6. Remove splitter cut-off valve (235) and spring (236) from Bore C (refer to Figure 8).

Figure 8. Trimmer Valve Body
Installation of Splitter Cut-off Valve and Spring
1. Install spring (236) then splitter cut-off valve (235) into Bore C (refer to Figure 8).
2. Install a new gasket (231) onto cover (232) and install the cover onto trimmer valve body (224) by
compressing the valve springs and installing two ¼-20 x 5 inch threaded rods, two washers and two running
nuts into each side of the cover. Compress the springs by evenly tightening the nuts to lower the cover.
Make sure the valve springs and gasket are properly positioned against the cover and the springs do
not damage the gasket.
3. Continue compressing the valve springs until two ¼-20 x 1 inch bolts (234) and lockwashers (233) can be
installed. Remove the two threaded rods, washers and running nuts and install the remaining eight bolts and
lockwashers. Tighten the bolts to 9-11 lb ft (13-14 N•m).

Principles of Operation, Splitter Cut-off Valve
The splitter cut-off valve and its spring are included in a separate trimmer valve body bolted to the main valve body
assembly. The splitter cut-off valve controls the flow of main pressure to the splitter shift valve. When solenoid G is
de-energized, solenoid pressure is directed to the bottom of the valve. Hydraulic force overcomes the spring force
and moves the valve up. In this position, main pressure flows through the area at the middle of the splitter cut-off
valve and is directed to the splitter shift valve. When solenoid G is energized, the solenoid check ball unseats and
allows solenoid pressure at the bottom of the valve to exhaust. Spring force pushes the splitter cut-off valve down,
blocks main pressure flow to the splitter shift valve, and causes the splitter clutches to exhaust. Refer to Figure 9.

DTC C0082 Transmission Output Brake Range Verification
(SPN 11752 / FMI 31)
Refer to Appendix C for information on 9832 Output Brake and Rapid Warmup Hydraulic Schematics.
Circuit Description
This test verifies the transmission turbine shaft remains stationary when the Rapid Warmup input function is
active. It also verifies the output shaft remains stationary when the Output Brake input function is active. The test
uses the turbine and output speed sensors to continuously monitor for turbine shaft or output shaft slip when
the respective input functions are commanded on.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
When Rapid Warmup is commanded on, the DTC will set if the TCM detects turbine speed is greater than 40
rpm for more than 3 seconds.
When Output Brake is commanded on, the DTC will set if the TCM detects output speed is greater than 40
rpm for more than 3 seconds.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
• The TCM illuminates the CHECK TRANS light.
• The TCM inhibits lockup engagement.
• The TCM commands the transmission to LTN.
• DTC is stored in TCM history
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
The DTC will automatically become inactive and deactivate the Check Trans light on the next ignition cycle.
Use Allison DOC to clear the DTC from the TCM history. The TCM automatically clears the DTC from the TCM
history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without the DTC recurring.
Diagnostic Aids
• DTC C0082 may be caused by:
– Output shaft speed sensor signal circuit issues.
– Turbine shaft speed sensor signal circuit issues.
– Low clutch pressures, main pressure, or control main pressure.
– Main valve body issues such as stuck/sticking valves, mechanically defective solenoids, broken springs,
damaged valve bores, damaged gaskets, excessive leaks to exhaust, etc.
– Internal transmission damage.
– Off-going or on-coming clutch issue.
– Defective or damaged TCM
• The diagnostic test that checks for turbine speed only runs when the Rapid Warmup input function is active.
If DTC C0082 sets only when Rapid Warmup is active but not when Output Brake is active, this indicates
an issue is likely present with splitter-low clutch or its control circuit.
