Introduction:
Effective April 15th, 2022, all 9832 OFSD, OFS and OFSI transmissions will be produced with new components that
allow the transmission to be capable of an output brake function and a rapid fluid warmup function. The hardware
changes include a new main valve body, new trimmer valve body, two additional solenoids and a temperature
sensor to monitor oil temperature in the torque converter. Transmissions produced after the effectivity date will
contain all the necessary hardware to utilize the new features, but availability of these features is determined by
the Transmission Control Module (TCM) calibration.
Description:
Beginning with software level H212 for Commercial Electronic Controls 5 (CEC5), the Rapid Warmup and Output
Brake functions were made available to 9832 OFS model calibrations. The warmup and brake features are
Input/Output (I/O) functions that can be integrated to activate by switch and hardwire to the TCM or by a J1939
message provided by a rig controller. Details of each function are described below.
Output Brake Function:
The brake function uses two of the transmission’s stationary range clutches to lock the output shaft from rotation.
During brake operation, pressure to the splitter clutches is cut off to allow the turbine to rotate freely and maintain
Neutral. The brake function request is enabled when input functions CT1 and CT2 are switched on simultaneously
or the J1939 brake function request message is sent to the TCM.
The brake function will automatically deactivate when a forward operating range is selected, even if the brake
function request is still enabled.
The following parameters must be met to activate the Output Brake function. If the function is commanded but one
or more of the requirements are not met, the output brake will disengage until all requirements are met.
• Transmission is in N (Neutral)
• Engine is running and engine speed is between 550-1150 rpm
• Output speed is below 400 rpm

• Transmission sump oil temperature is above -15° C (5° F)
• CT1 and CT2 input functions are switched on simultaneously (if hardwired)
NOTE: To protect the transmission from damage, the Output Brake will disengage if the engine speed
goes above 1260 rpm or engine load exceeds 85% while the brake function is commanded on.
Rapid Warmup Function:
The warmup function uses two of the transmission’s stationary range clutches and one rotating clutch. This
combination of clutches locks all transmission shafts from rotation, creating a stall condition within the torque
converter. Stalling the torque converter causes the engine’s rotational energy to heat the transmission fluid. The
fluid heated in the torque converter circulates throughout the transmission and reduces the amount of time needed
to reach normal operating temperature. The warmup function request is enabled when input function CU is
switched on or the J1939 Rapid Warmup function request message is being sent to the TCM.
The warmup function will automatically deactivate when the transmission sump temperature reaches a calibrated
value. The calibrated value for automatic deactivation can be set at a customer’s desired value between 10-90°
C (50-194° F). The default temperature for automatic deactivation is 60° C (140° F). If the warmup function
I/O request remains active, the TCM will automatically reactivate the warmup function if transmission sump
temperature falls sufficiently below the calibrated value.
The following parameters must be met to activate the Rapid Warmup function. If the function is commanded but
one or more of the requirements are not met, Rapid Warmup will be disengaged until all requirements are met.
• Transmission is in N (Neutral) or B (Brake) when Rapid Warmup is requested
• Engine is running and engine speed is between 550-1150 rpm
• Transmission sump oil temperature is above -15° C (5° F) and below the calibrated deactivation temperature
• Transmission converter oil temperature remains between 80-110° C (176-230° F)
NOTE: To protect the transmission from damage, the Output Brake will disengage if the engine speed
goes above 1260 rpm or engine load exceeds 85% while the brake function is commanded on.

Allison DOC® Updates:
Beginning with version 2021.5, Allison DOC has been updated to display parameters related to Rapid Warmup and
Output Brake when these features are enabled in the calibration. The new parameters include Torque Converter
Outlet Fluid Temperature, Torque Converter Outlet Temperature Sensor Resistance, Input Signal State and Input
Function State for Output Brake and Rapid Warmup. These parameters are found on the Data Monitor screen in
Allison DOC. It is also possible to plot these new parameters using the Strip Chart screen. Refer to Figure 1.

Parts Information:
Updated components related to these new features are described in Table 2 and Table 3. All current components
within each engineering group are fully interchangeable backwards when used together, but current and former
components cannot be inter-mixed. It is possible to update a former 9832 to be capable of the Rapid Warmup and
Output Brake features by updating all parts in both engineering groups.
