SITUATION
The Check Control message below appears even though the coolant level is not below minimum when the
engine is cold.

Check Control message (ID 166): Top up coolant.

CAUSE
Corrosion on the pin contacts for the coolant level sensor in the expansion tank.

CORRECTION
Inspect the connector and the pins on the level sensor with a mirror for corrosion. If corrosion is found,
replace the expansion tank and repair the wiring harness at the coolant level sensor.

PROCEDURE
Follow Repair Instruction 17 11 100 Removing and installing/replacing coolant expansion tank.
Once the tank is removed, repair the harness with repair kit PN 61 11 9 289 009 or 61 11 9 312 324.
Once the expansion tank is removedRemove the protective tape approximately 4 inches away from the connector
Cut the connector off the harness
The repair harness (PN 61 11 9 289 009 or
61 11 9 312 324) comes with two splice
terminals and two heat shrink sections.

Cut back approximately 8 – 10 inches of the
repair harness after the connector for coolant
level switch to make the repair.
NOTE: The repair kit has enough wire to
connect the coolant level sensor to the BDC.

Only 8 – 10 inches of wire are needed for this
repair.

Install the new expansion tank after harness repairs.
