***** Dealer Announcement *****
Nissan is now updating the temporary hold on 6 specific model year 2021 Kicks® vehicles
identified in Service Comm to a dealer inventory quality action. Dealers will inspect the steering
column torque sensor lot code and, if necessary, replace the steering column assembly. Due to a
supplier manufacturing concern, vehicles may lose Steering Assist.
Affected vehicles are subject to stop sale and are either currently in dealer inventory or assigned
and in transit to the dealer.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE ATTACHED INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Verify if vehicles are affected by this quality action using Service Comm or DBS National
Service History – Open Campaigns I.D. PMA04
• New vehicles in dealer inventory can also be identified using DBS (Sales-> Vehicle
Inventory, and filter by Open Campaign).
• Refer to NPSB 15-460 for additional information
• Some vehicles may still be in transit. Please continue to check newly arriving
inventory for campaign applicability.

2. Please do not drive, loan, sell or trade the specific vehicles in dealer inventory subject to
this quality action.

3. Use the attached procedure to remedy any vehicles affected by this quality action prior
to sale.
4.

Once remedied, dealers should submit the applicable warranty claim for the action
performed to close the campaign in Service Comm and release the vehicle for sale.

STEERING COLUMN

Required Tools
 A white crayon will be required to perform this action. (Figure 1)
 Crayons are widely available and can be obtained from local or online retailers.

Service Procedure

To help avoid the risk of personal injury or property damage be sure to observe the
following:



Before servicing the SRS, place ignition switch in the OFF position, disconnect both
battery terminals then wait at least three minutes.



Always work from the side of the left knee air bag module. Do not work in front of it.



Do not use air tools or electric tools for servicing the left knee air bag module.



Always place the left knee air bag module with the pad side facing upward.



Do not cause impact to the left knee air bag module by dropping, etc.



Replace the left knee air bag module if it has been dropped or sustained an impact.



Do not allow oil, grease, detergent, or water to come in contact with the left knee air
bag module.



Do not insert any foreign objects (screwdriver, etc.) into the left knee air bag module.



Do not disassemble the left knee air bag module.



Do not expose the left knee air bag module to temperatures exceeding 93°C (199°F).

1. Disconnect the negative and positive battery terminals and wait at least (3) three
minutes.

2. Remove Instrument panel “C”.

 Using a suitable tool, release the
instrument panel “C” clips
 If equipped with automatic air
conditioning, disconnect the aspirator
hose and the in vehicle temperature
sensor harness connector
 Remove the instrument panel “C”

3. Remove instrument side finisher LH.

5. Remove the (2) two bolts from the hood
lock/fuel filler door release handle.
(Figure 5)




Pull the hood lock/fuel filler door
release handles toward the rear of
the vehicle to disengage from the
steering column lower cover

6. Using a suitable tool, disengage the (3)
three steering column lower cover clips.

LH knee air bag
module

7. Remove the bolts from the left knee air
bag module and discard bolts. (Figure 8)
Important:
Do not reuse the LH knee air bag bolts.

8. Remove the LH knee air bag.





Pull the LH knee air bag toward the
rear of the vehicle to release the LH
knee air bag from the instrument
panel



Lower the LH knee air bag to obtain
access to the harness connector and
harness retainer (Figure 9)



Release the harness retainer from the
LH knee airbag



Disconnect the harness connector



Remove the knee air bag and place
on in a safe area to help prevent
damage to the LH knee air bag

Always place the left knee air bag
module with the pad side facing
upward to help prevent injury and
property damage in the event of an
unintended knee air bag deployment.

9. Locate the steering column torque sensor. (Figure 10)


The torque sensor lot code is located on back side of the sensor and is visible by
looking upward at the sensor

Important:
Do NOT remove or disconnect the steering column torque sensor.

10. Highlight the lot code of the steering
column torque sensor. (Figure 11)


Using a white crayon, with light
pressure rub the crayon over the lot
code until the lot code is legible

11. Document the lower line of the lot code
on the repair order. (Figure 12)


After documenting the lot code, using
a dry shop rag wipe the crayon
markings off of the steering torque
sensor

Hint:

Taking a photo of the lot code with a cell
phone can assist with reading the lot
code.

12. Review the first (5) five digits of the lot code obtained in Step 11.


 If the first (5) five digits of the lot code matches one of the above sets of numbers,
replace the steering column assembly. Refer to the ESM for removal and replacement
instructions. STEERING - STEERING SYSTEM - REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION STEERING COLUMN – Removal and installation
 If the first (5) five digits do NOT match the below lot codes, no action is necessary,
reassemble the vehicle in reverse order. Be sure to replace the LH knee air bag bolts
with new parts during reassembly.


Torque knee air bag bolts to 10.8 N●m (1.1 kg-m, 8 ft-lb)



Torque battery terminals to 5.5 N●m (0.56 kg-m, 49 in-lb)
