There is no immediate repair required unless the BMW vehicle is currently experiencing this problem.
Customer Notification Letter
Even though this is NOT a Recall, BMW NA is sending VIN-specific customer notification letters.
CAUSE
Situation A and/or B below may occur to the Model vehicles listed above.
A. The following check control messages are displayed (SI B12 28 18)
CCM 34 "Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)"
CCM 633 "Powertrain Malfunction!"
And one or more of the following faults may be stored in the EME (electrical machine electronics):
222014 - Motor position sensor: Acquisition of measured values or tilt sensor angle faulty
222021 - Motor position sensor: Phase difference between sine input and cosine input greater than
threshold value
222022 - Motor position sensor: Engine speed exceeds threshold value
222029 - Motor position sensor: Offset of signal breakdown of amplitude difference between sine
input and cosine input greater than threshold value
2223B6 - Motor position sensor: Interrupt of sine coil or cosine coil or excitation coil
222724 - Longitudinal dynamics level 2: Group fault torque limits (collective error moment limits)
B. The red air bag warning light is illuminated with the Check Control message (SI B65 05 18)
Restraint system, CCM-ID: 97
The following fault memory is entered in the Advanced Crash Safety Module (ACSM4):
9309A0 - Safety battery terminal 3: Resistance too big / Safety cutout of EME: Resistance too
great
These issues maybe be caused by a pin contact problem at the A190*1B connector at the Electrical Machine
Electronics (EME).
The wires going to connector A190*1B maybe under tension. Over time, vibrations may sporadically increase
the resistance values of these connections outside the acceptable range which leads to the above issues.
CORRECTION
Follow the instructions in the PROCEDURE section.

Note: This bulletin provides a repair-specific extended limited warranty for a repair procedure that was
previously established and provided in the two Service Information Bulletins listed below.
Determine the vehicles current I-Level using ISTA, AIR or the vehicle key read information.
Perform a Vehicle Test, and if one or more of the faults listed above are stored, please refer to:
A. SI B12 28 18, and/or
B. SI B65 05 18

CLAIM INFORMATION
This repair-specific limited warranty extension to 10 years/120,000 miles applies to eligible US-specification
BMW vehicles that are registered, operated, and have their covered repair performed by an authorized BMW
center in the United States (including Puerto Rico) for defects in materials or workmanship.
This coverage is subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements, limitations, and exclusion criteria that
applies to the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.
The existing limited warranty coverage for the whole vehicle and other components has not changed.
This coverage supersedes the coverage that is provided under the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program or any
BMW Group Vehicle Service Contract that applies to the vehicle.
If and after a EME wiring harness connector (A190*1B) is performed, the connector is then covered by the
remaining portion of the extended limited warranty coverage period.
Non-Qualifying Repairs
Non-US specification vehicles, ineligible vehicles, eligible vehicles operated and repaired outside the United
States and Puerto Rico and/or the diagnosis and repair of other unrelated issues are not covered under the
terms of this limited warranty extension.

Please be sure to also perform any additional before and/or after work (including attaching labels) as
required by the open campaigns on the vehicle. Close any other open programming and encoding
Campaign repairs as outlined in the corresponding Service Information Bulletin.
Only if the situation above does not apply, the additional flat rate labor operation code (00 70 963) listed above
to perform the programming and encoding procedure is then claimable within the work procedure and coverage
guidelines described in this bulletin.

Please explain the reason for this consequential repair work (the why and the what) on the repair order and in
the claim comments section.
Programming and Encoding (00 70 963) - Vehicle Control Units (RO and Claim Comments Required)
This procedure automatically reprograms and encodes any vehicle control modules that do not have the latest
software I-level.
If one or more control modules fail during the reprogramming procedure, claim the required consequential
repair work procedures to address this issue (including performing the IRAP Control Unit Recovery first as
required, refer to the SIB in AIR) under the Defect Code in this bulletin with the labor operations in AIR that
apply.
Please explain the additional work procedures that were performed (The why and the what) on the repair order
and in the claim comments.
For covered repairs that address control module failures that occurred prior to performing this reprogramming
procedure, claim this work with the Defect Code and labor operations (including diagnosis) in AIR that apply.
Based on which one applies to your center, please refer to SI B01 01 20 or B01 07 20 for the applicable
procedure for documenting, claiming, and explaining, on the RO and in the claim comments, your diagnosis
work time (WT), job/repair work time (WT), and the vehicle repairs your center performed, unless otherwise
required by State law.
Previous Customer-Pay Repairs – Limited Warranty Extension Reimbursement
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW NA) will provide reimbursement for qualifying customer-pay repairs that
were performed on an eligible vehicle prior to the release of this repair-specific limited warranty extension.
Customer-pay repairs are subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements, limitations, and exclusion criteria
that applies to the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.
Repairs that Do Not Qualify for Reimbursement
Repairs performed on ineligible vehicles, eligible vehicles operated and repaired outside the United States and
Puerto Rico and/or the diagnosis and repair of other unrelated issues. This exclusion also applies to repairs that
were performed using (including those repairs that result from using) non-genuine BMW parts and/or used
BMW passenger car or light truck parts.

For a customer to request reimbursement for a qualifying customer-pay repair performed either by an
authorized BMW center or independent repair shop located in the United States (including Puerto Rico), please

Due to variations during assembly, the EME wiring harness may be applying to much tension on the
EME wiring harness connector (A190*1B).

Over time, with increased tension on this connector and together with the body vibrations that
occur normally while driving, the electrical resistance values for the pins located in this connector
can increase beyond an acceptable range.

3. How does this affect my vehicle?
Should this specific issue occur, your vehicle will store the corresponding fault codes that will be
generated.

Additionally, the applicable Check Control Messages (CCMs) that apply will display either for the
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), Powertrain Malfunctions, and/or for the Supplement Restraint
System (SRS) together with an illuminated red Air Bag warning light.
