General Information
The rain light sensor (RLS) requires proper mounting and clear windshield visibility for auto wipe to function
properly. It is always recommended when checking for proper operation of the RLS, that the sensor be properly
fastened to its mounting bracket and that the gel is free of fingerprints and foreign material. Also ensure that no
air bubble larger than 1 mm is present in the gel.
If the RLS is properly installed, there are no active fault codes, and intermittent wiper speed 1 and 2 do not
function when water is sprayed in front of the sensor, then it is possible the RLS is not calibrated. Follow the
instructions below to calibrate the RLS.
Rain Light Sensor Calibration Procedure
To calibrate the sensor, the electrical system must be powered down and powered up three times. Ensure that
all electronic control units (ECUs) activate and deactivate during each ignition cycle.
1. Turn on the ignition switch, move the wiper stalk switch to intermittent position 1 or 2 (auto wiping mode).
2. Spray water on the sensing area of the windshield. Spray only to check the activation of the wipers.
3. Wait one minute and spray water on the windshield. If the RLS is properly calibrated, the wipers sweep
when water is sprayed in front of the sensor.
4. If the wipers do not activate upon the first spray, or delayed upon second spray, this indicates the sensor
failed to calibrate. Try recalibrating the sensor again, using the process listed above.
5. If the sensor works, but the wipers do not sweep when water is sprayed over the rain sensor, then check
the windshield as a possible cause for the RLS not calibrating.
Checking Windshield Transmittance
If the RLS fails to calibrate, then a possible cause is a slight variance in windshield transmittance from the
target value in a limited group of windshields. To see if your windshield is in this group, locate the trademark
code in the bottom-right of the windshield, shown in Fig. 1. Compare the trademark code with the codes in
Table 1 to determine if windshield transmittance is the cause.
