Condensation inside Headlights and Taillights
Section: 08.30-1 HEADLIGHT CLUSTERS and 08.31-1 TAILIGHT CLUSTERS

This Technical Information is intended to provide a guideline for correct diagnosis of complaints
related to the generation of condensation inside headlights and taillights visible on the internal
surface of the lens.
Condensation is a natural physical phenomenon that occurs under particular conditions, e.g.,
driving rains or thunderstorms, when the outside air is damp and there is a difference in
temperature between the outside and the inside of the headlight or taillight.

Headlights and taillights are equipped with aeration systems that provide the ventilation
necessary to eliminate internal condensation generated for the physical reasons indicated
above, therefore some technical time is required for its dispersal.
The problem is normally resolved on its own spontaneously with changes in weather conditions
that facilitate evaporation of the condensation. In addition, the process speeds up by turning on
the lighting functions.
The excessive presence of condensation inside a headlamp or taillight could indicate the loss
of sealing; therefore, the component must be carefully inspected checking for any damage on
the component or on the related electrical connector. Replacement under warranty is not
allowed on any part damaged by external causes or tampering.
Actions: To check that condensation is dispersed as designed, turn on the low beams and
hazard warning lights while keeping the car indoors at a temperature as close as possible to
68 °F (20 °C). If condensation starts to evaporate after 30 minutes, the sealing integrity is not
compromised and a component replacement is not needed.
If the condensation does not start to evaporate after 30 minutes, it will be necessary to perform
a road test with the low beams on for 30 minutes at speeds above 50 mph (80 km / h), After the
road test, there must be no more drops of liquid water on the lens and any remaining
condensation must have been visibly reduced.
If the residual condensation has been reduced, component replacement is not needed;
otherwise, replacement of the affected part is needed.
According to current Blue on Line Policies, headlights and taillights are included in the prior
approval list therefore a Support request Blue on Line is needed providing the following
information:
•

Picture of the initial condition of headlight/taillight indicating the odometer value

•

Picture after 30 minutes of static test required with lights on

•

Pictures after the 30 minute road test indicating the final odometer value
