TL Aerial Devices on SDP Back Yard Carriers

Issue:
The lower boom lift cylinder on Terex TL model aerial devices installed on SDP track carriers, produced
from December 2010 to September 2020, has seen the piston nut pulled off the rod. The issue is related
to transport and securement on the trailers. Truck mounted aerials are not involved. Failure of the
piston nut may result in not being able to stow the lower boom.

Action:
What the Owner Must Do:
Terex recommends you perform this action as soon as possible, no later than 10 days from the receipt of
this bulletin.
•

Immediately inform all users, operators, and supervisors that the lower boom lift cylinder must be
inspected before use.

•

Contact your nearest dealer to arrange a date to bring the unit to the service center for repair.

•

If use of the machine is required, see the continued use section below.

Continued Use:
The units may remain in service provided the inspection below is performed. Daily, the lower boom must
store at the same attitude each time it is stored and not show signs of looseness. The boom rest
adjustment will change as units wear. The proper stowing procedure and adjustment stated in the
manual shall be required at annual inspections.
1. When fully raised the lower boom angle will approximately be as shown in the table below for the
referenced cylinder:

2. Inspect to determine if the lower boom cylinder is marked with the latest revision per the above
table, for example 492540 Rev D. If the cylinder revision matches the above table, the rest of the
Field Service Kit (basket and boom rest adjustments, decals, flow control adjustment, basket rest
paint stripe) still applies. Reference Figure 1 for the location of the part number stamp.

3. If the cylinder revision does not match the above table, inspect to determine if the cylinder has a
loose piston nut by conducting the following test. This test must be performed once every month
from the release date of this bulletin until the Field Service Kit is installed if the unit will continue to
be used. If the cylinder revision matches the above table, the following test is not required, and the
cylinder will not need to have the seals and locknut replaced.
a. Set up machine for unit use on a flat, level, and hard surface and set outriggers following
all instructions in the Operator’s Manual.
b. Connect a suitable rope or sling to the knuckle of the machine being tested so it can be
pulled as shown in Figure 2.

Position booms from the lower controls over the rear of the carrier so that the lower boom
is fully raised and the upper boom is lowered toward the ground, similar to Figure 2.
d. Connect the rope/sling from Step b. to another machine (such as a bumper winch or
recovery winch) with a loadcell or dynamometer visible from the ground, as shown in
Figure 2.
e. Both machines may need to be anchored to prevent tipping.

Place a dial indicator on the lower boom lift cylinder rod, reading to the case of the
cylinder as shown in Figure 3. Zero the dial indicator before conducting the pull test.

g. Use the second machine to create a pull load on the test machine up to 2000 pounds
maximum. The direction of pull is over the top of the upper boom towards the basket
using Figure 2 as reference.
i. If during the above test the dial indicator reading exceeds .100”, the cylinder
must be replaced before further use.
ii. If the dial indicator reading is .100” or less and the machine is inspected daily,
use can continue.
Be aware of potential energy stored in rope/sling during pull test. Failure of the rope/sling
while under load could cause the rope/sling or dynamometer to strike personnel resulting in
death or serious energy.
4. Verify that the lower boom cylinder flow controls are set properly, controlling the speed of the
raising and lowering of the lower boom per the instructions in the included Field Service Kit.
5. Always follow inspection and maintenance requirements as specified in the manuals.

What Terex will Do:
Terex will provide Field Service Kit Z1620 to your dealer, parts and labor, at no cost to the owner. The kit
does the following:
•

Verify the adjustment of the boom supports as provided by the installer, change the upper boom tie
down from the cam style to ratchet strap, change the piston nut in the lower boom lift cylinder.

Contact Terex Utilities; through your nearest TEREX Utilities dealer as shown on the web site,
terexutilities.com, call Terex Utilities Warranty Department at 1-844-837-3948 or by email at
[email protected] to arrange for repair within 10 days of receiving this bulletin. If you have
sold the unit involved in this bulletin forward this bulletin to the new owner within 10 days and notify Terex
of the serial number and contact information for the new owner.
Dealers and Installers: A letter is being sent to owners of affected units. If affected units are in your
area TEREX Utilities will contact you to arrange the repairs. Labor allowance is 8 hrs. Affected units, as
shown on the owner’s letter, will have the repairs performed at no charge to the owner.
Only TL37, TL41, TL45, and TL50 aerial models installed on SDP back yard carriers are involved. If the
owner contacts you call TEREX Utilities Warranty Department at 1-844-837-3948 for instructions and to
arrange shipment of parts.

Important: Some of the involved units may be in rental fleets. Terex requires you to complete the
service on these units before renting, or to inform the renters within 10 days of receipt of this bulletin, of
the continued use provisions, and schedule repairs at the next maintenance interval.
Terex and local industry standards (CSA and ANSI) requires the purchaser of a Terex unit report to Terex
the model and serial number of each machine sold, as well as the name, address, and telephone number
of the new owner, within 60 days of the sale. Use the Owner Update Form in the manual to update the
owner status of any of your machines. Terex also asks the seller to provide the new owner information so
if you require additional copies of the Owner Update Form or have any questions, please contact TEREX
Utilities Warranty Department at 1-844-837-3948 or [email protected].
