SERVICE ACTION: INSPECTION OF THE ELECTRONIC WASTEGATE
ACTUATOR CONNECTOR

Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer
delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure
the next time the vehicle is in the shop.

SITUATION
Due to a software error, long charging times (10-12 hours) for the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
high-voltage battery may damage the internal printed circuit board and the electrical connection to
the electronic wastegate actuator.

CAUSE
A software error in the Digital Motor Electronics (DME).

CORRECTION
Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.29.1x or higher (released April 2021).
Visually Inspect the electronic wastegate actuator and electrical connector.
Repair or replace the damaged components as needed.

PROCEDURE
Determine the vehicle's current I-level by either using AIR or the ISPA Next application
1. Is the I-level lower than S15A-21-03-545?
If yes, proceed to step #2.
If no, proceed to step #3.

2. Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.29.1x or higher (released April 2021).

Note that ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have
the latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10) when performing
programming.

Programming and Diagnostics / Programming Documentation.
3. Disconnect and visually inspect the electric wastegate actuator’s electrical pin connector.

4. If discoloration is visible on the connector
as shown to the left, the electrical connector,
pins, and the electronic wastegate actuator
must be replaced.

During this workshop visit, the affected vehicle may also show one or more programming and encoding
Technical Campaign repairs open, the programming and encoding procedure may only be invoiced one
time.
Select one of these open Technical Campaigns to perform and submit for updating the vehicle to the
required I-level or higher.
Please be sure to also perform any additional before and/or after work (including attaching labels)
as required by the open campaigns on the vehicle. Close any other open programming and
encoding Campaign repairs as outlined in the corresponding Service Information Bulletin.
As determined by the above, reimbursement for this Service Action will be via normal claim entry utilizing
the work package information below that applies.

and the claim comments (For example: B12 02 21 WP 1), unless otherwise required by State law.
Programming and Encoding the Vehicle Control Units (RO and Claim Comments Required)
The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do
not have the latest software I-level. If one or more control module failures occur during this programming
procedure:
Please claim this consequential control module related IRAP recovery procedure (when applicable as
required)/repair work under the defect code listed in this bulletin with applicable AIR labor operations.

Please explain this additional work (The why and the what) on the repair order and in the claim comments
section
For control module failures that occurred prior to performing this programming procedure:
When covered under an applicable limited warranty, claim the applicable test plan and the
corresponding control module-related repair work using the applicable defect code and labor
operations in AIR (including diagnosis).
As applicable to your center, please refer to SI B01 01 20 or B01 07 20 for claiming your diagnosis work
time, job/repair work time (WT), RO/Claim WT and the repair-related explanation procedures, unless
otherwise required by State law.
Note: After the completion of this Service Action, please refer to SI B01 07 21 regarding the
extended limited warranty coverage that applies to the turbocharger wastegate valve actuators on
these vehicles.
