SITUATION
Oil leak at the sealing surface between the oil sump and engine housing.
An updated version of the oil sumps will be available around March 2021 timeframe; in sections of the
sealing surface, there is now a groove to take additional sealing compound, see areas marked in red in
attached figure. The older version oil sumps do not have grooves for the sealing compound.

Please note: There may be further updates to the oil sump design released in the future.
CORRECTION
The updated Oil Pan went into production starting with engine number: 1520356N, vehicle production
approximately as of July 2020.
To help decipher the serial number format of K8X engines, please see below.
PROCEDURE
In a complaint case, always replace the older version of oil sumps which do not have grooves in the sealing
surface with newer versions that do have grooves in the sealing surface.
The sealing surface of the oil sump must be clean and oil-free before applying the sealing compound.
Remove adhering sealing compound residues completely from the sealing surface of the engine housing;
this sealing surface must also be oil-free immediately prior to installing the oil sump.

If a complaint of a leak is received (for K8x) on a vehicle with the updated oil sump (with grooves for the
sealing compound), please either create a TSARA case or add comments to the warranty claim with the
following important information:
Location of the leak (front/rear/left/right)
Is the leak in an area of the sealing surface which has a groove or in areas without a
groove?
Is sealing compound lacking in the leak area according to your assessment?
Were you able to identify possible reasons for the leak?
Please attach photos when possible
To make it easier to determine whether an older sump is installed, below is an explanation of K8X engine
number:
Breakdown of engine number of the first engine produced with optimized oil sump, 1520356N:
Assembled in 15th calendar week of the year (20)20 It is the 356th 900cm³ K8X engine assembled in that
week in Berlin.
Any engine with a serial number older than 1520356N was originally built with the older oil sump which did
not have grooves in the sealing surface.
PARTS INFORMATION
Obtain and confirm the part numbers for your specific vehicle by entering the chassis number in ETK which
takes into account specific equipment and/or options.
Additional parts like gaskets, hardware and chemicals may be required for the complete repair.
