Container Chassis Axle Wheel End Inspection
SAF-HOLLAND® has identified certain axle assemblies installed
on Milestone Equipment Company LLC container chassis that
may have drum brake wheel ends with a dragging brake.
Dynamometer testing has shown that this condition will
definitely not cause a thermal event. However, heavy braking
events, before the brake shoes and drums on these chassis
are burnished, may result in brakes that drag. Over time this
condition will reduce as normal brake wear occurs.
During this phase of the project, all units currently not in
service to Milestone Equipment Company LLC with the
following range of chassis numbers will be inspected.
Refer to Table 1 for the range of chassis unit numbers.
This bulletin describes the steps necessary to properly inspect
and remedy the axles in question.
For this inspection, SAF-HOLLAND® has agreed to cover 0.5
hour(s) inspection time per axle. Once the inspection procedure
is complete, you will need to supply the chassis VIN number,
axle serial number, axle part number and date of inspection
completion for labor reimbursement Table 2 (Page 4). For
your convenience, a form is provided with all of the required
information needed to facilitate the labor reimbursement. Once
inspection is completed, please submit all forms to your SAFHOLLAND® Warranty department. E-mail address is Service@

Model Identification
The location of the axle serial tag is found near the center of the
axle (Figure 1). The sample tag shown (Figure 2) will help
you interpret the information on the SAF-HOLLAND®, Inc. serial
tag. The part number is on the first line. The axle beam rating is
on the second line. The third line contains the serial number.

Inspection procedure
In preparation for this inspection, consult XL-TA10006OM-en-US
for relevant safety instructions.
Following the steps below perform the inspection on each
wheel end assembly:
1.

Inspect the lining to drum clearance on the bottom brake
shoe with a 0.002" (0.05mm) feeler gage inserted between
the lining and drum on both lining segments near the center.

2.

If the gap is greater than 0.002" (0.05mm) the clearance is
acceptable. No further inspection required.

3.

If the gap is less than 0.002" (0.05mm) the wheel end should
be lifted so it can be rotated.

4.

On a lifted wheel end rotate the tire by hand and check
for any dragging. If the dragging exists proceed to step 5.
If no dragging is present, no further inspection is required.
Go to Step 8.

Make the required adjustment to your axle's slack adjuster
as follows:
a. T he adjuster must be backed off by rotating the 7/16"
adjusting hex counter-clockwise.
b. T he adjuster must be manually adjusted at this time.
Adjust brakes by rotating the 7/16" adjusting hex
clockwise until the lining lightly contacts the drum
(Figure 3).
c. B
ack-off the adjuster by rotating adjusting hex
counter-clockwise 1/2 turn. A ratcheting sound will
occur, which is normal. Never use an impact wrench
or internal damage will occur (Figure 4).

Rotate the tire by hand and check for any dragging. If the
dragging exists proceed to step 7. If no dragging is present,
no further inspection is required. Go to Step 8.

7.

Further re-adjust the slack adjuster like step 5 except
rotate the adjusting hex counter clockwise an additional
1/4 turn (3/4 total).

8.

Rotate the tire by hand. Ensure brake stroke is within the
slack adjuster manufacturer's limit. Prepare to put the trailer
back into service. Inspect brakes per the chart below.
