Poppet (Axle Stop) Adjustment
Use the following instruction to set the axle stops on your steering gear
and ensure proper operation.
1. Install steering gear on vehicle.
2. Install pressure and return lines.
3. Install lines to slave gear (if applicable).
4. Fill power steering reservoir to full mark.
5. Attach Pitman arm on sector shaft lining up timing marks on sector
shaft and Pitman arm.
6. Install steering wheel yoke and secure.
7. Lift front axle off the ground.
8. Start engine, recheck fluid level.
9. Turn steering wheel to the right and left to the axle stops. Some effort
will be required to turn wheels to stops.

1. Install steering gear on vehicle.
2. Install all pressure and return lines.
3. Fill power steering reservoir to full mark.
4. Attach Pitman arm on sector shaft lining up timing marks on sector shaft and Pitman arm.

6. Start engine, recheck fluid level.
7. Turn steering in the direction that you are adjusting.
8. Locate which plunger you need to adjust and turn the plunger out while someone holds the wheel in the direction that you are trying to adjust to.
9. The plungers in the Ross gears are located in the head and at the opposite end of the case and are secured with a sealing lock nut. This is the
same for Sheppard 292, 392, 492 and 592 gears.
10. The plunger in the Sheppard “S” Series gears is located in a ¼-inch hole in the head by the worm shaft. The gear for the alternate direction is
located at the opposite end of the case.
11. Using a screwdriver, adjust the plunger out (counter clockwise) so the wheel will go to the stop.
12. Be careful not to turn the plunger out past the surface of the head as it could blow out with severe force.

ArvinMeritor Inc. (“ArvinMeritor”) warrants to purchaser (“Purchaser”) for the specified period that the
remanufactured transmissions listed below will be free from defects in material and workmanship.
Coverage under this warranty begins on the date of purchase, and ends at the expiration of the
applicable time period or mileage, whichever occurs first. Coverage under this warranty requires that
the remanufactured transmission is used on vehicles the specifications of which have been approved
by ArvinMeritor.
This warranty does not cover normal wear and tear; nor does it cover a remanufactured transmission
that fails, malfunctions or is damaged as a result of (I) improper installation, adjustment, repair or
modification (including incorrect electronic control unit programming; use of unauthorized attachments;
or changes or modifications in the vehicle's configuration, usage or vocation from that which was
originally approved by ArvinMeritor), (II) accident, natural disaster, abuse, or improper use (including
improper flushing of cooler and cooler lines or altering engine power settings to exceed the transmission,
axle, driveline, and/or clutch torque capacity), or (III) improper or insufficient maintenance (including
any deviation from approved lubricants, change intervals, or coolant levels).
As the exclusive remedy under this warranty, ArvinMeritor will, at its option, repair or replace such
remanufactured transmission free of charge, if found on examination by ArvinMeritor to be nonconforming.
In no event shall ArvinMeritor be liable for special, incidental, indirect, or consequential damages of any
kind or under any legal theory, including, but not limited to, towing, downtime, lost productivity, cargo
damage, taxes, or any other losses or costs resulting from a defective covered component.
To obtain coverage under this warranty, Purchaser must take the vehicle or Mascot transmission to the
point of purchase of the Mascot transmission, or any authorized Mascot dealer within a reasonable
amount of time and request warranty coverage. All remanufactured transmissions being returned under
this warranty must have a plug inserted into each port to avoid damage during the return process.
FAILURE TO DO SO VOIDS THIS WARRANTY.
If it is necessary to return any parts under this warranty, Purchaser agrees not to make any deduction
on account thereof from remittances on current accounts while claims are in the process of disposition.
Any expense incurred without our consent for repairs or replacement will not be allowed.
THIS WARRANTY IS EXPRESSLY IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS, EXPRESS,
IMPLIED OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS
FOR PARTICULAR PURPOSE. IN NO EVENT SHALL SELLER BE LIABLE FOR INCIDENTAL OR
CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY NATURE.
This is the entire agreement between ArvinMeritor and Purchaser about warranty and no ArvinMeritor
employee or dealer is authorized to make any additional warranty on behalf of ArvinMeritor. This
agreement allocates the responsibilities for component failure between ArvinMeritor and Purchaser.
