Release of Remanufactured WTEC II Electronic Control Units (ECUs)
MODELS AFFECTED:
3000 and 4000 Series Product Family Transmissions
Introduction:
Allison Transmission, Inc. is pleased to announce the release of remanufactured WTEC II Electronic Control Unit
(ECU) P/Ns R29517003 (12/24V Max Feature) and R29514527 (12V Only Basic Feature). Max Feature WTEC II
ECU assembly P/N 29517003 (former WTEC II service ECU) and all other WTEC II Shift Selector/ECU assembly
part numbers are cancelled. Additional information is contained in Transmission Parts Policy Letters 16-TPPL-09
(PP7824EN) and 17-TPPL-11 (PP8005EN).
Remanufactured 12/24V Max Feature WTEC II ECU P/N R29517003 can be used to service any WTEC II ECU.
Calibration Identification Numbers (CINs) beginning with 08 can be loaded into this ECU. Remanufactured 12V
Only Basic Feature WTEC II ECU P/N R29514527 can only be used to service basic ECUs with CINs beginning
with 06 or 07. CINs beginning with 06 must be upgraded or "rolled up" to 07 version prior to loading into this ECU.
Replacement ECU Selection:
If the calibration being replaced is defined as a basic feature calibration in the Calibration Summary Report AND
has a CIN beginning with 06 or 07, use replacement ECU P/N R29514527.
If the calibration being replaced has a CIN beginning with 08 or has the calibration setting set to a Max Feature
ECU setting as defined in the Calibration Summary Report, ECU P/N R29517003 must be used.
The Calibration Summary Report can be generated using Allison TCM ReflashTM. Select "Add”, enter the CIN or
TCM Assembly Number, then select "View Summary Report”.
For example, CIN 06-000MB-031-8 has a CIN beginning with 06 and the Calibration Summary Report shows that
the Uncalibrated ECU Hardware Number is set to 29511202 -- Basic - Integral Pushbutton. Even if this calibration
was loaded into a Max Feature ECU, reman P/N R29514527 can be used since the Calibration Summary Report
indicates the Basic setting. Refer to Figure 1.

As another example, CIN 07-00FRH-001-X has a CIN beginning with 07, but the Calibration Summary Report
shows the Uncalibrated ECU Hardware Number of 29514526 -- Max - Remote. Even though the CIN begins with
07, reman ECU P/N R29517003 is required since the calibration is set to a Max Feature setting. Refer to Figure 2.

Interchangeability:
Former 12/24V Max Feature ECU assembly P/N 29517003 and current ECU P/N R29517003 are completely
interchangeable.
Former 12V Only Basic Feature ECU assembly P/N 29514527 and current ECU P/N R29514527 are completely
interchangeable.

Shift selector assemblies and ECUs can be replaced separately when an integral shifter / ECU assembly must be
serviced. WTEC II ECU P/Ns R29517003 and R29514527 can be used to service these assemblies.
Shift Selector/ECU assemblies are cancelled and shall be serviced with the remanufactured ECU and detail
WTEC II shift selector part number.

Service Instructions:
Consult the 3000/4000 Series Product Families and Support Equipment Parts Catalogs for disassembled views of
the ECU assembly and Integral Shifter/ECU assemblies.
Replacing a Remote ECU:
When replacing a WTEC II remote ECU, calibrate the replacement ECU as defined in the Defining the CIN to
Load into the Replacement ECU section.
Replacing an Integral Shifter/ECU Assembly:
When replacing the ECU or the shifter portion of an integral Shifter/ECU assembly, use a static protected
workstation or an anti-static wristband such as Bosch
Tool Number 7744 or equivalent (refer to Figure 3) to ensure
no static electricity discharge damage will occur to the ECU or Shifter.

Shift Selector Removal
1. Separate the shift selector from the ECU by removing the four (4) slotted Torx® head screws.
2. Carefully disconnect the shift selector ribbon cable at the connector on the ECU circuit board.
3. Remove the four (4) slotted Torx® head screws holding the cover P/N 29507676 to the top of the replacement
ECU. Refer to Figure 4.
NOTE: Retain the cover for installation on the ECU core (refer to Core Handling Procedures).
Shift Selector Installation
1. Install the shift selector by connecting the ribbon cable to the connector on the replacement ECU circuit board.
2. Re-install the four T15 Torx® head screws. Torque the screws to 0.9-1.1 N·m (8-10 lb in).
3. Calibrate the replacement ECU as defined in the Defining the CIN to Load into the Replacement ECU
section.
4. Reinstall any support hardware that was removed during this repair (clip nuts, screws, etc.).

Defining the CIN to Load into the Replacement ECU:
When using replacement ECU R29517003, update the CIN to the most recent version of CIN beginning with 08.
This can be done using the CIN upgrade method defined in this SIL.
When using replacement ECU R29514527, load the most recent version of CIN beginning with 07. This can be
done using the CIN upgrade method defined in this SIL.
If the existing CIN is superseded by a new CIN, use the most recent version of the new CIN.
If the updated CIN is not available, contact the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) at 1-800-252-5283 or contact
the Allison Calibration Support Desk via email at [email protected].
CIN Upgrade Method:
Original CINs may begin with 06, 07, or 08.
1. Determine the original CIN and the CIN level required for the replacement ECU.
2. Modify the CIN by updating the first 2 digits to the level required for the replacement ECU.
3. Increment the last character of the CIN by 1 or 2, depending on whether the CIN level was incremented by
1 or 2.
For example, to update a CIN beginning with 07, change the beginning of the CIN to 08 (by incrementing the CIN
up by 1) and increment the last character by 1. For example, CIN 0700152003J will update to 0800152003K. The J
increases by 1 character to K.
NOTE: The letters I and O are not used in CINs, so those letters should be skipped. The order of the last
digit is 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C…Y,Z,0,1,2, etc.

Core Handling Procedures:
As outlined in TPPL 16-TPPL-09, there is a core fee associated with the purchase of P/Ns R29517003 and
R29514527. The Remanufactured ECU is shipped in the remote configuration with metallic cover P/N 29507676.
When P/N R29517003 or P/N R29514527 is used to replace the ECU in an integral Shifter/ECU installation,
remove cover P/N 29507676 and install it on the ECU core before shipment to the remanufacturing center location
identified in the TPPL. ECU Cores returned without cover P/N 29507676 will be assessed a core deduction.
