MODELS AFFECTED:

4000 Product Family

Introduction:
Allison Transmission, Inc. is pleased to announce the release of several new 4000 Product Family ReTran®
assemblies. Allison Transmission will begin offering these new models ReTran® transmissions in April 2004. Some
models will be configured as TransID 1 units with RaybestoseBay logo clutch plates and others will be configured as TransID
3 units with Dynax clutch plates. The TransID 1 ReTran® models are intended to support replacement of TID1 and
TID2 transmissions. The TransID 3 ReTran® models are intended to service TID3 transmissions.
Interchangeability:
1. The new 4000 Product Family ReTran® assemblies are designed to service two distinct HD model families.
• Close ratio HD 4060(P) including 4000 MH, 4000 TRV, 4000 EVS, 4000 HS, 4000 RDS, and 4000
SPS transmissions.
• Wide ratio HD 4560(P) including 4500 EVS, 4500 HS, 4500 RDS, and 4500 SPS transmissions.
2. Close Ratio ReTran® models are designated 4000(P)(R)RM. Wide ratio ReTran® models are designated
4500(P)(R)RM.
3. Both 4000(P)(R)RM and 4500(P)(R)RM models offer a variety of transmission options including PTO/nonPTO provision, 2 inch or 4 inch sump, output retarder and standard or tachograph rear cover, and TID1 or
TID3 hardware configuration.
a. TID1 configuration: All TID1 4000 Product Family ReTran® models are built using RaybestoseBay logo clutch
plates (except C5, which is Dynax material) and a TID1 internal wiring harness. This enables these
transmissions to be used in WTEC II controls systems and early WTEC III in place of TID1 and TID2
transmissions without having to recalibrate the ECU. The ECU will autodetect the correct TID level once
it has been set to UNADAPTED shifts.
b. TID3 configuration: All TID3 ReTran® models are built using Dynax clutch plates and a TID3 internal
wiring harness. These transmissions may be used to replace TID3 transmissions without requiring
a recalibration of the ECU.
c. A summary of 4000 Product Family ReTran® product features follows:

4. By using a TID3 ReTran® model for TID3 transmissions only, and using TID1 ReTran® models for TID2 and
earlier transmissions, it will not be necessary to recalibrate the ECU. Should any servicing outlet elect to
use a TID3 ReTran® model with Dynax clutch plates in place of TID1 or TID2 transmission, the following
must be considered.
a. WTEC II controls system: Retrofit the ReTran® model with a TID1 internal harness. Recalibrate the
ECU with a TID1 calibration for Dynax.
b. WTEC III controls system: Recalibrate the ECU to the latest version 8A cal if previous cal installed
before 10/24/99.

Procedure:
1. Determine the TID level of the transmission being replaced. The transmission’s TID level is available in
the following locations:
a. The TID level is printed on the transmission data tag for transmissions with E numbers and groups
displayed on the data tag. For earlier WT transmissions with assembly numbers only, the TID level is
equivalent to TID.
b. The TID level is printed on a white label on the outside of the internal harness.
c. The TID level is shown in “Unit History” of the Allison Transmission Extranet.
d. The TID level is displayed in ECU Calibration Information of the Allison DOC® or Pro-Link® diagnostic
tools.
2. Using the Allison Transmission Extranet Unit History display, determine the following for the transmission
being replaced:
a. Model, i.e. 4060 and 4000 vocational models (Close Ratio) or 4560 and 4500 vocational models (Wide
Ratio) (15 Group or 39 Group).

b. Control module group (16 Group).
c. Cooler port provision (20 Group).
NOTE: All 4000 Product Family ReTran® units with 4 inch sumps are shipped with two metal plugs
(P/N 29507796) in the front ports and a cooler port cover plate (P/N 29506507) over the rear ports.
Servicing outlets must adapt cooler port setup for the specific vehicle configuration.
For example, if front cooler provision is required simply remove the two P/N 29507796 metal plugs
and connect the cooler lines. If rear cooler port provision is required, the P/N 29506507 cover plate
and six M10 x 1.5 x 28 bolts (P/N 29507795) must be removed and replaced by the cooler manifold
(P/N 29503546) and six M10 x 1.5 x 35 bolts ( P/N 11514355) from the transmission being removed.
d. Torque converter series (21 Group).
e. PTO or Non-PTO provision (34 Group).
f. Rear cover or Retarder configuration (39 Group).
3. Refer to the following tables to select the appropriate ReTran® assembly number.
a. Tables are grouped by the model being replaced, i.e. 4000(P)(R)RM and 4500(P)(R)RM.
b. Refer to the top of each sheet to select the appropriate torque converter series.
c. The tables are further divided into base rear cover, tachograph rear cover and retarder option.
Determine the rear cover/retarder feature in the transmission being replaced from 39 Group.
i. 4000 and 4500 series ReTran® units are available with one of the following rear cover module
configurations:
1. TID1 and TID2 Rear Cover – Base Rear Cover, No Wraparound slinger provision.
2. TID1 and TID2 Rear Cover – Tachograph Rear Cover with 4-tooth nut, No Wraparound slinger
provision.
3. TID3 Rear Cover – Base Rear Cover, No Wraparound slinger provision.
4. TID3 Rear Cover – Tachograph Rear Cover with 4-tooth nut, No Wraparound slinger provision.
5. TID3 Rear Cover – Base Rear Cover, Wraparound slinger and axial lip seal provision.
6. TID3 Rear Cover – Tachograph Rear Cover with 4-tooth nut, Wraparound slinger and axial lip
seal provision.
ii. 4000 and 4500 series ReTran® units are available with the following retarder module configurations:
1. TID1 and TID2 Retarder – Medium Capacity Retarder, No Wraparound slinger provision.
2. TID3 Retarder – Medium Capacity Retarder, Wraparound slinger and axial lip seal provision.
iii. Table 4 and Table 5 may be used to determine the retarder module features in the transmission
being replaced so a matching ReTran® unit may be selected. Use the 39 Group of the transmission
being replaced to find its engineering features, TID level, spring capacity, etc.
