SI B 01 26 18 (DC 32 10 90 39 00): For this vehicle, the Electronic Power Steering (EPS)
steering gear electric motor mounting bolts’ limited warranty for defects in materials or
workmanship has been extended to 10 years or 120,000 miles as determined from the
original in-service date. This coverage is subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements,
limitations, and exclusions that apply to the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for
Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.
If you have ELW eligibility and/or coverage questions, please contact the Warranty department through IDS by
selecting Coverage, Policy, Coding Questions and Mileage Corrections prior to performing any repair.

INFORMATION
For the eligible vehicles, BMW of North America, LLC (BMW NA) is extending the limited warranty for the bolts
for the electric motor of the power steering gear to:

10 Years/120,000 Miles
This EPS electric motor mounting bolt-specific limited warranty extension applies to defects in materials or
workmanship.
This coverage is subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements, limitations, and exclusions that apply to the
BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.
Important Note: Beyond 4/50, any other EPS steering gear failures that also require the assembly to
be replaced are NOT covered under the terms of this assembly component-specific no time (age) or
mileage coverage.
Note: This bulletin is notice of a limited warranty extension. This is NOT a notice of a Recall or Service
Action.
There is no immediate repair required unless the BMW vehicle is currently experiencing this problem.
Customer Notification Letter
Even though this is NOT a Recall, BMW NA will be sending VIN-specific customer notification letters in a
phased release.

SITUATION
Component-Specific Limited Warranty Extension
For the eligible vehicles, BMW of North America, LLC (BMW NA) is extending the limited warranty for the bolts
for the electric motor of the power steering gear to:
10 Years/120,000 Miles

This EPS electric motor mounting bolt-specific limited warranty extension applies to defects in materials or
workmanship.
This coverage is subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements, limitations, and exclusions that apply to
the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.
Important Note: Beyond 4 years/50,000 miles, any other EPS steering gear failures that

CAUSE
There are front end noises when turning the steering wheel and/or there is limited power steering assist when
maneuvering or parking the vehicle.
For the basic steering gears, one possible cause is that the mounting bolts for the electric motor may
become loose, missing and/or broken due to corrosion.

CORRECTION
The steering gear is to be replaced if one or more of the five (5) screws/bolts are either loose, missing, and the:

Bolts are not broken (DC 32 10 90 02 00); or the
Bolts are broken (DC 32 10 90 39 00).
Document the status of bolts on the repair and in the claim comments.

PROCEDURE
When a vehicle arrives at your center experiencing the symptoms described in this Service Information
Bulletin:

1. Disconnect the battery according the REP 61 20 900.
2. Remove the front underbody protection according to REP 51 47 490.
3. Visually inspect the (5) screws securing
the power pack to the steering gear (shown).
4. If any of the screws in the five (5) indicated
locations are found loose, missing or sheared
off, replace the steering gear.
5. Important: Photos must be taken of the
screw holes showing the condition in which
they were found.

7. This photo example shows the depth
gauge measurement of the screw holes were
the bolts are missing, the bolt holes depths
are equal or deeper than 65 mm. These
missing bolts did not break:
DC 32 10 90 02 00.

9. Save and file these photos by the
corresponding VIN and repair order number
as the reference, photos must be presented
to BMW upon request, either during claim
processing and/or upon part inspection

10. Following repair instructions REP 32 13 572, replace the steering gear.
11. Following repair instructions REP 32 00 155, perform a wheel alignment.
12. Reconnect the battery.
13. Connect the vehicle to ISTA/D and perform a vehicle test.
14. Work through the measures plan and program the vehicle using ISTA 4.12.30 or higher.

Target integration level
F020-18-07-531 or higher
Note that ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have
the latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

15. Delete the fault memory.
16. For vehicles with sports suspension settings, install the underride protection.
17. Install the front underbody protection according to REP 51 47 490.

Only order the required parts in the quantities needed to address customers’ vehicles that have confirmed
failures.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Applicable Models vehicles that are still within the 4 year/50,000 Mile New Vehicle Limited
Warranty
For all covered EPS steering gear replacements, please submit your claim using the standard AIR Defect
Codes and labor operations (including diagnosis).
Applicable Models vehicles that are beyond the 4 year/50,000 Mile New Vehicle Limited
Warranty but still within 10 year/120,000 mile Extended Limited Warranty (DC 32 10 90 02
00 or 32 10 90 39 00 below).
The EPS electric motor mounting bolt-specific limited warranty extension to the 10 years/120,000 miles limit
applies to eligible US-specification BMW vehicles registered, operated and have their covered repair performed
by an authorized BMW center in the United States (including Puerto Rico).
The existing limited warranty coverage for the whole vehicle, other components or the EPS steering
gear (for non-mounting bolt-related issues) have not changed.
Only for EPS electric motor mounting bolt-related failures, this coverage supersedes the coverage that is
provided under the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program or any BMW Group Vehicle Service Contract that
applies to the vehicle.
Non-Qualifying Repairs
Non-US specification vehicles, ineligible vehicles, eligible vehicles operated and repaired outside the United
States and Puerto Rico and/or the diagnosis and repair of other unrelated issues are not covered under the
terms of this limited warranty extension.
