CANISTER INSPECTION AND
AUXILIARY CANISTER INSTALLATION (SC184)

This bulletin provides the procedure to inspect the evaporative system’s existing canister for
noise caused by loose charcoal on some 2011-2016 MY Sportage (SL) vehicles equipped with
the 2.4L ULEV engine produced from May 6, 2010 through November 16, 2015. If noise
caused by loose charcoal is confirmed, to improve evaporative system performance, follow the
procedure set forth below on how to install the auxiliary canister kit.
Note: The existing canister should not be uninstalled or replaced.

 NOTICE

Inspection Procedure:
1. Lift vehicle on a hoist and locate the
evaporative system charcoal canister in
the right rear near the fuel tank.

2.

Using a rubber/plastic hammer, place the
bottom end of the hammer against the
canister surface and while holding firmly,
tap the head of the hammer five (5) times
and listen for loose charcoal sound from
inside the canister.

3a. If no loose charcoal sound is heard,
mark a letter “V” and the date of the
inspection
using
a
permanent
white/yellow marker on the surface of the
existing canister. This service action is
now complete no further action is
required.
3b. If loose charcoal noise is heard inside
the canister, proceed to install the
auxiliary canister kit outlined on page 3.

Auxiliary Canister Kit Installation:
1.

Carefully detach the evaporative system
canister close valve (CCV) wire harness
clip (A).

Disconnect the CCV connector (B).

3.

Slide the hose clamp (C) back and
carefully detach the CCV vapor hose (D).
Note: The yellow dotted square shows
the original clamp location.

4.

Install the new supplied canister hose (E)
(90 degree end) into the CCV vapor inlet
and secure with the provided clamp.

Place the new auxiliary canister (F)
behind the driver side fuel tank band and
install the existing CCV vapor hose (D)
into the new canister inlet and secure
with the hose clamp.

Insert the other end of the new vapor
hose (E) into the bottom of the new
auxiliary canister (F) and secure with the
supplied hose clamp.

Re-attach the two (2) CCV harness clip
(A) and CCV connector (B) removed in
steps 1 and 2.

Insert the two (2) auxiliary canister
retaining bolts (G) from behind the
canister bracket as shown and then
install the outer bracket (H) over the fuel
tank band.

Install the two (2) supplied auxiliary
canister retaining nuts (I) to secure the
canister assembly to the fuel tank band.
Tightening torque specification:
2.9 - 4.3lb.ft (3.9 - 5.9N.m,
0.4 - 0.6kgf.m)

10. Perform KDS Evap Leakage Test using
KDS.

11. Confirm test completed to ensure
auxiliary
canister
installation
was
successful.

ATTENTION: THE PROOF OF COMPLETION CARD AND CAMPAIGN COMPLETION STICKER
ARE RESTRICTED TO ONLY DEALERS IN THE FOLLOWING STATES:
California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode
Island, Vermont, Washington, New York and Delaware.
VEHICLE EMISSION RECALL - PROOF OF CORRECTION CARD
A Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction card must be filled out for all vehicles registered in
California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode
Island, Vermont, Washington, New York and Delaware. Residents of these states, who own an affected
vehicle, will be required to possess a Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction card as evidence of
voluntary service campaign completion, when they apply for vehicle registration renewal.
WHAT TO DO WITH THE CARD:
The Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction card must be completed by the Dealership's Service
Manager using a permanent ink pen. A fine point pen is recommended. When filling in the information,
copy the information directly from the vehicle, not the repair order. ALL INFORMATION MUST BE
PRINTED AND NEAT.
NOTE: DO NOT COMPLETE THE CARD UNLESS THE SERVICE CAMPAIGN WORK IS
COMPLETED.
The copy of the card shown below indicates the areas to be filled in. Each area must be filled in. The
completed card should be given to the owner of the vehicle upon completion of the Campaign and
placement of the Campaign Completion Label outlined below.

FILLING OUT AND APPLYING THE CAMPAIGN COMPLETION LABEL:
The dealer must fill in the Dealer Code and Date information fields on the Campaign Completion Label.
Once complete, affix the campaign completion label under the hood of the vehicle, as shown below.
Apply SC184 Campaign Completion Label
onto the body in the area next to the shock
tower, as shown. NOTE: Be sure to clean
the mounting surface to ensure proper
label adhesion.
