This Technical Information Cancels and Replaces
the previous TI 2590 issued in May 2019
-Subject: New paintwork polishing cycle
Please note that the following paintwork polishing cycle has been revised due to the introduction of a
new type of clear coat. This document describes three different types of procedures commonly carried
out in the body repair shop:
1. Repairing defects and polishing;
2. Re-polishing and blending;
3. Correcting orange-peel defects or numerous contamination defects in close proximity within
same area.
The following Allchem part numbers for all of the materials to be used in the procedure are shown in the
following table

Procedure
1. REPAIRING DEFECTS AND POLISHING;
Repairing defects
Correct/repair the contamination defect or other fault identified with an orbital
polisher fitted with a 3M 464 LA A5 (P3000) abrasive pad.
Continue until the defect has been completely removed, holding the orbital polisher
perfectly flat against the surface during the entire procedure – Fig. 1, 2.

Polishing – Step 1
Use the orbital polisher, fitted with the 90 mm diameter red polishing sponge, and
“Virtus 487 Ultra High Definition Cut And Polish Extreme” polishing compound Fig. 3.

Polish the area repaired previously, observing the following instructions and
precautions:

Make sure that the polishing sponge is clean;
Remove any chalk or pencil marks before starting;
Do not apply an excessive quantity of polishing compound to the area polished;
Polish the zone for at least 10 seconds, applying pressure and with slow movements.
If it is necessary to polish in several locations in the same area, use 150 mm polishing
sponges and the relative orbital polisher.
Polishing – Step 2
After the polishing procedure described above, re-polish the relative area using the
orbital polisher fitted with the 90 mm yellow pad and “Virtus 472 Ceramic Ultrafine
Cut” polishing compound - Fig. 4.

Polish the area, observing the following instructions and precautions:

Make sure that the polishing sponge is clean;
Do not apply an excessive quantity of polishing compound to the polished area;
Polish the zone for at least 10 seconds, applying pressure and with slow movements.
Cleaning area and inspecting results with lamp
After polishing, inspect the results.
• Clean the treated surface with heptane and a cloth. For technical and safety
information relative to heptane, visit the website:

• Use only clean cloths to prevent the risk of scratching the clear coat;

Inspect with a lamp to check for any remaining polishing defects.
2. RE-POLISHING AND BLENDING
Step 1
Use the rotary polisher, fitted with the 90 mm diameter red polishing sponge, and
“Virtus 487 Ultra High Definition Cut And Polish Extreme” polishing compound Fig. 3.
Polish the area, observing the following instructions and precautions:

Make sure that the polishing sponge is clean;
Remove any chalk or pencil marks before starting;
Do not apply an excessive quantity of polishing compound to the area polished;
Polish the zone for at least 10 seconds, applying pressure and with slow movements.
If it is necessary to polish in several locations in the same area, use 150 mm polishing
sponges and the relative polisher.
Step 2
After the polishing procedure described above, re-polish the relative area using the
orbital polisher fitted with the 90 mm yellow pad and “Virtus 472 Ceramic Ultrafine

Finish by cleaning the area and inspecting the results with a lamp.
3. CORRECTING ORANGE-PEEL DEFECTS OR NUMEROUS CONTAMINATION
DEFECTS IN CLOSE PROXIMITY WITHIN SAME AREA
Follow the instructions given below if it is necessary to work on large surfaces to correct
orange-peel defects or numerous contamination defects in close proximity within the same
area:

Dry-sand with a P1500 grit abrasive disc to repair the defects;
Wet-sand the repaired surface with a P3000 grit abrasive disc;
If necessary, wet-sand the repaired surface again with a P6000 grit abrasive disc.
This repair procedure must be carried out in multiple steps to eliminate all signs of the
repair itself and to facilitate subsequent polishing, which must also always be carried out
in two steps.
Step 1

• Make sure that the polishing sponge is clean;
