Oliver Travel Trailers
Model Elite II. The axles used on this trailer are supplied by Dexter Axle. The axle model number is 6339056 is rated at 3,500 lbs. and is manufactured in Dexter's Georgia manufacturing facility. Oliver travel trailers was notified, by a customer, of a problem with one of these Dexter axles, whereby three of the nuts securing the hub and to the axle flange had come undone, this matter was rectified by a service appointment. Oliver travel Trailers became aware of a second issue with this Dexter axle model, this was raised by a different customer and consisted of replacing one of the nuts, this matter was rectified but raised a potential problem. Oliver Travel Trailers contacted Dexter to inquire in relation to the issues that arose. We determined that both axles were from the same batch manufactured by Dexter in January 2109. On checking our service records we identified another similar issue with one of the same model of axles that did not fall within that batch range. Oliver Travel Trailers reported that fact to Dexter and started an investigation into the matter. We determined that the torque range was between 45-70 ft. lbs. for the four bolts that secure the axle to the brake assembly. Oliver Travel Trailers began checking the torque range on the bolts and nuts in question on axles present on our, we found a number of bolts which were not tightened to the minimum torque setting, again this was conveyed to Dexter. the following day representatives of Dexter attended our Hohenwald facility and confirmed our findings relating to the torqueing of the nuts. Since then Dexter inform us that they have determined a time period for the scope of the defect which appears to be from the beginning of 2017 to the present day and this equates to 780 model 6339056 axles supplied to us. Dexter Axle are currently working on addressing the problem through an inspection and rectification program. model year 2017-2020 Elite II. See Attachment included.

This report relates to a non-conformance in a purchased part which forms part of our Elite II travel
Trailer.
It is manufactured by Dexter Axle 2900 Industrial Parkway East, Elkhart, IN 46516, phone 574-295-7888
the part in question is part number 6339056 a 3,500 lb. axle, manufactured at Dexter’s manufacturing
plant located in Georgia, USA
We believe that Dexter axle determined the range of non-conformance by the start of the particular
production process up to present day. The recall population from records held by Dexter has been
communicated as 780 axles, Our Elite II travel Trailer has two such axles fitted. The date range for the
non-conformance with Dexter’s torque specification is believed to be January 2017 to present day. This
covers all Elite II Travel Trailers manufactured by Oliver Travel Trailers in 2017, 2018 and year to date
2019.
The nature of the non-compliance for the Dexter Model 6339056 3,500 lb. axle is, the brake hub is
secured to the axle by means of four bolts pressed into the hub assembly which locate to a flange on the
end of the axle tube. Four nuts secure the assembly and the flange, Dexter state the torque range is 4570 ft. lbs. some of the nuts do not meet the minimum torque requirement. This initially came to light by
two customers reporting faults with the nuts ranging from missing to one being loose.
As a result, axles in possession of Oliver Travels Trailers were inspected in house and a number were
found to be out of compliance.
In accordance with 49 CFR 577.5 the potential risk to vehicle safety are that the nuts come loose, and
cause vibration in the axle hub assembly. In the worst-case scenario if all the nuts came off or the bolts
failed this would likely result in the hub and wheel assembly becoming detached from the axle shaft.
