WHIRRING NOISE IN VEHICLE HEARD BETWEEN THE SUBWOOFERS
WHEN LOUD MUSIC PLAYING

SITUATION
The customer states that there are whirring noises heard from behind the front seats when loud music is
playing. It is heard coming from between the two subwoofers, behind the rear cupholder.

CAUSE
The bass-related vibration from the subwoofers causes the wiring harness to move, resulting in this noise.

CORRECTION
Encapsulate the wiring harness in a bed of spray cavity foam to stop the noise.

PROCEDURE
Release the safety belt(s) from the belt guide at
the side of the seat(s).
Move both seats forward to access the storage
area behind the seats.

To access the harness:

Remove both subwoofer speaker grilles
(1)
Remove the center console trim behind
the cupholder (2)

Remove the speaker grill at the 4 retaining screws
(1), then lift the grill (2).

Upon reinstallation, the screws must be torqued to
1.8 Nm.

When removing the center console trim (1) behind
the cupholder, there are four retaining clips (2).

To remove the left and right side trim panels (2)
you must first remove the expanding rivet (1).
Disengage the trim panel (2) by pushing forward,
rotate it down and inward to remove.

Lift up the removable panel (storage shelf; 1).

Remove the wiring harness from its
retainer clips (5)
Lift up on the harness to open a cavity
below it for the cavity foam

Spray cavity foam generously between
the two housing halves, under the
harness

Wait approximately 15 minutes until a
skin has formed on the surface of the
foam.

Note: Do not wait too long, or the foam will harden
so that the harness can no longer be pressed in.

Gently press the harness (8) down into
the foam
Reinstall the wiring harness into its
retainer clips

Reassemble the vehicle
Test audio system operation using music
with a lot of bass. Make sure there are no
more noises heard from this area.
If any other areas are identified as
causing similar noises, please document
what you find in an Info Only

If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 51 47 647 instead of
51 47 147.
Refer to AIR for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances.
Work time labor operation code 51 00 001 is not considered a Main labor operation. Also, since the work
time FRU allowance to be claimed is specified, a separate punch time is not required. However; it still
