Subject: Check to Protect/Airbag Repair Month and State DMV Letters
As previously announced, Nissan is participating in several outreach campaigns aimed at improving the
completion rates for open Takata airbag recalls over the next few months. Some efforts will be
nationwide, while others will be focused in a particular area. Some will have updated messages and
imagery meant to motivate customers. Nissan wants to ensure dealers are familiar with the materials and
messages that their customers may receive, so examples of these forthcoming communications are
included in this announcement.
Airbag Repair Month and Check to Protect
Nissan is partnering with the National Safety Council (NSC) in the “Check to Protect” campaign to create
more consumer awareness of recalls on their vehicle. The intent is to create a consumer habit of checking
their VINs for open recalls and campaigns at least twice a year.
As a part of the awareness efforts, the NSC and Nissan are announcing “Airbag Repair Month” and
focusing outreach efforts in the following states during the month of September (surrounding dealers may
encounter customers familiar with these communications):
 South Carolina
 Alabama
 Mississippi
 Louisiana
The communications will drive traffic to CheckToProtect.org, using Facebook ads, digital billboards, and
banners, to urge customers with open recalls to contact their dealer to schedule repair.

In support of the targeted activities for September, dealers located in targeted markets within Alabama,
Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina, will receive one (1) Free Airbag Repair feather banner
each. Feather banners will begin shipping directly to dealers beginning August 26, 2019. Dealers
receiving banners should display them in a prominent location.

Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Airbag Safety Recall Letter
The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in several states will be sending Airbag Safety Recall letters,
which remind registered owners of their open airbag recall and urges them to contact their Nissan
dealership to have it repaired immediately.
Airbag Safety Recall Letter timing:
 Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Florida DMV mailing – mid to late September
 Vermont, Georgia, and Arkansas DMV intend to send letters to owners in mid October
Please see the attached sample letter that the state of Alabama began mailing on June 17, 2019.
