Digger Derricks

Use of Digger Derricks with Platform

Issue:
Digger Derricks are multipurpose machines which can, when properly equipped, dig holes, set poles, lift
loads, and carry personnel. To be used as an aerial work platform with the platform occupied the
ANSI/ASSE A10.31 standard has several requirements the user must be aware of.

Action:
ANSI/ASSE A10.31-2013 requirements when using a digger derrick with a work platform attached include,
but are not limited to:

The pole guide and digger, must be rendered inoperable
The platform can only be used on structures with energized components if equipped with top
controls.
If not equipped with top controls the lower control operator must remain at the lower controls
when the platform is occupied.
The installer must perform a stability test of the completed unit in conformance with
ANSI/SIA A92.2.
Lifting capacity when the platform is occupied is limited.
The ID plate on the unit must indicate the platform capacity for the unit.

The ANSI/ASSE A10.31-2013 standard made these requirements for all units being used after the
effective date of September 1, 2014:
“ANSI/ASSE A10.31-2013 1.4 Application. The design and manufacture requirements of this standard apply to all
digger derricks manufactured on or after the effective date. All other provisions apply to new or existing units in
use regardless of their date of manufacture.” (emphasis added)

If a Digger Derrick’s ID plate does not have a platform capacity listed the Digger Derrick is not
properly equipped or tested for use with a platform occupied.
