SUBJECT

The Engine Intermittently Loses Power
MODEL

All models with the N20, N26, and N55 engines produced to 11/2015
SITUATION

Intermittently the engine may experience a loss of power along with a Drivetrain Malfunction
message.
The Service Engine Soon light (MIL) may also be illuminated.
There are one or more of the following air mass plausibility and Valvetronic system faults stored in
the DME memory:
E-series with BN2000
z

2775 – Air mass, plausibility: Air mass too low

z

2C57 – Charging pressure control, plausibility: Pressure too low

z

2DCE – Valvetronic system: No adjustment possible
3164 - Fuel tank ventilation system, 2nd inlet point: Malfunction

z

F-series with BN2020
z

102002 – Air mass, plausibility: Air mass too low

z

120308 – Charging pressure control, plausibility: Pressure too low

z

133B04 – Valvetronic system: No adjustment possible
191C02 - Fuel tank ventilation system, 2nd inlet point: Malfunction

Erroneous faults set due to DME software parameters

PROCEDURE

1. Using the latest version of ISTA, perform all recommended test plans.
a. Visually check that there are no leaks in the lines or connections of the charge air
system.

b. If a fault is detected during the testing, complete all steps as specified to identify the
cause.
c. Were any faults detected?
Yes- Make the necessary mechanical repairs and program the vehicle to the
specified integration level in the table below using ISTA/P 3.57.0 or higher.
No- Program the vehicle to update the DME software.
2. After programming clear the DME adaptations and perform a teach-in of the Valvetronic
system.

This repair is covered by the terms of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, BMW Certified
Pre-Owned Limited Warranty or State-specific Emissions/SULEV Warranty. Please check
for appropriate coverage.

If the vehicle being repaired is out of Warranty coverage, and the faults are set because of
DME software parameters, and only require programming, this repair is covered by the terms
of the Federal (8 years or 80,000 mile DME coverage).

Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance, the labor operations listed
above include “diagnosis time.”
Vehicle Programming and Encoding
If a control module was working properly and it fails to program correctly or requires initialization,
please claim this additional work with the applicable KSD2 labor operations under the defect code
listed above.
The diagnosis and repair of vehicles “arriving” with failed control modules or stored faults which
will cause them to fail during programming cannot be claimed under the defect code listed in this
bulletin.
Other Repairs
z

Performed “prior” to programming and coding the vehicle, and/or

z

Faults are found and additional repairs are necessary (Including Air Mass and/or Valvetronic
system-related mechanical repairs) based on the diagnosis performed and included in the
labor operations listed above,

Claim this additional items under the appropriate component defect code together with the
applicable additional required labor operations listed in KSD2.
Overlapping Labor – Other Repairs
If invoicing KSD2 flat rate labor operation codes for other repair work results in overlapping labor,
invoice work time labor operation 00 50 000 for the additional time (FRU) minus the overlap
instead.
Work time labor operation code 00 50 000 is not considered a Main labor operation.
Eligible other repair work that will be claimed under a difference defect code do require separate
punch times.
On the repair order and in the claim comment section, please identify the labor operations labor
operation code 00 50 000 replaces and itemize the claimed FRU amount.
