VOLUNTARY EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN 16E-A02:
PROGRAM CONTROL UNITS (DME OBD)
Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before
customer delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please
perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop.

MODEL
E92 (3 Series Coupe)

E93 (3 Series Convertible)

With the N54T engine

SITUATION
Due to a DME software status error, the on-board diagnostics (OBD) for the catalytic convertor and
downstream oxygen sensor may not function properly.
This could result that the OBD readiness for “Oxygen sensor” will not set as completed, but it
would not have any effect on the actual tailpipe emissions.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Emissions Recall Campaign affects involves the E92 and E93 with the N54T engine produced
from 3/16/2010 to 10/1/2013.
First check if a Recall Completion Label, SD 92-435 for this campaign is already attached to the
underside of the hood on the right (passenger) rear close to the windshield.
If the label is present, the Campaign has already been performed and no further action is
necessary.
Affected vehicles which require this Recall Campaign to be completed will show it as “Open” when
checked either in AIR, the “Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the
Key Reader.

CAUSE
Unfavorable DME software

PROCEDURE
Program the vehicle using the latest version of ISTA/P (3.56.4 or higher).
Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do
not have the latest software.

Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).
For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to Centernet / Aftersales Portal /
Service / Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
After the vehicle has been checked and corrected,
obtain a label (SD 92-435) and with the indelible
marker provided, legibly print the Recall name, Recall
number, and dealer code (5 digits) on the “Emissions
Recall Campaign Completed Label” (see illustration).
Note: Additional labels can be ordered online at BMW
TIS.

For California centers only: It is required by the California Code of Regulations that an executed
orange "Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction" certificate (SD92-084, see illustration) be
provided to each customer (for vehicles registered in the state of California), once the Recall on his
or her vehicle has been completed.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty, and as applicable, any
Federal, State or BMW Emissions Warranty or the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty
(only applies to BMW vehicles that are still within the BMW CPO coverage period but beyond the
BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty or Emissions Warranty coverage that applies to the
specific repair).
Reimbursement for this Recall will be via normal claim entry utilizing the following information:

Vehicle Programming and Encoding
If a control module was working properly and it fails to program correctly or requires initialization,
please claim this additional work with the applicable KSD2 labor operations under the defect code
listed above.
The diagnosis and repair of vehicles “arriving” with failed control modules or stored faults which will
cause them to fail during programming cannot be claimed under the defect code listed in this
bulletin.
Other Repairs
If other eligible and covered work is performed “prior” to programming and coding the vehicle,
claim this work with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.
