ENGINE POWER REDUCED WITH DME FAULT 10170F THROTTLE VALVE ADAPTATION
MODEL
F30 (3 Series Sedan)

G12 (7 Series Sedan)

With the B58M and N63R engines produced to 6/23/2016.

SITUATION
The engine runs with reduced power; the engine is in the emergency limp-home mode.
Malfunction indicator (MIL) is illuminated.
Check Control message is displayed.

(ID 29): Engine fault! Power loss

Fault code is stored in the DME fault memory:
z

10170F - Throttle valve, adaptation: maximum deviation of emergency running position is
exceeded on last teach-in value

The fault occurs when engine is not started within 30 seconds of terminal 15 (ignition) being
switched on.
z

After cycling the ignition (ignition off - ignition on), the engine runs normally.

CAUSE
Unfavorable DME software.

CORRECTION
Recode and reprogram the vehicle.

PROCEDURE
For conditions that are similar to the situation described:
1. Perform diagnosis with the latest version of ISTA or ISTA NEXT.
2. Program the vehicle using the latest version (ISTA/P or ISTA NEXT.

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do
not have the latest software.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).
