SUBJECT

Automatic Trunk Lift Operation Creates AM Radio Static
MODEL

F34 (3 Series Gran Turismo)

With option 0316 (automatic trunk lift)
SITUATION

The customer may complain of poor AM radio reception when operating the rear automatic trunk lift.
CAUSE

Automatic lift spindle drive motor
PROCEDURE

Confirm the customer complaint and then replace both left and right spindle drives using the following steps (for
the left side).
When removing the spindle drive, you must to be careful that the compression spring does not suddenly release.
Remember it is under spring tension, so use caution when removing.
Preliminary tasks to be performed:


Remove the trim panel for the roof pillar at the rear (C‐pillar).

1. Release the trim panel (1) from
the clips (2) in the marked area
with special tool 00 9 325.

2. Release the screw (1).

the clips (3) in the marked area
with special tool 00 9 325.
Feed out the trim panel (2).

3. The clips (1) on the trim panel
(2) must not be damaged or
missing.
If necessary, replace any faulty
clips (1).

4. The lip of the edge protection
(1) in the area of the trim panel
(2) must not be trapped. Feed
out if necessary.

Remove the cover for the rear window frame at the top.

5. Release the cover (1) at the clips
using special tool 00 9 325, and
remove.

6. The clamps (1) and latch
mechanisms (2) of the cover (3)
must not be damaged or missing.
If necessary, replace the
retainers (1).

7. Release the cover (1) at the clips
and remove.

8. The clips (1) and latch
mechanisms (2) on the cover (3)
must not be damaged or missing.

If necessary, replace the clips
(1).

Remove the front grab handle.

9. Fold the grab handle (1)
downwards.
Disengage and remove the
locking wedge (2) with an offset
screwdriver (3), as illustrated.

10. Repeat the procedure on the rear
locking wedge (1).

Note:
The version of the grab handle must be
determined for the following
procedure.

11. Only version A
Jerk back the grab handle (1)
until the grab handle (1)
detaches.

12. Only version B
Lightly pull the grab handle (2)
towards the inside by hand. Hold
under tension while releasing the
lower and upper tab (1) with the
screwdriver (3).
Remove the grab handle (2) and
place to the side.

13. Only after the grab handle (1) is
snapped in correctly can the
locking wedges (2) be fully
locked in position in the grab

14. Insert special tool 00 9 325
towards the rear of the headliner
as illustrated, and position on the
reinforcement (1).
Slightly strike special tool 00 9
325 towards the bottom to
release the clip (2).
Replace any faulty clips (2).

15. Press the headlining (1) slightly
towards the bottom and unclip
the cable clip (2).
Disconnect the plug connection
(3).

16. Danger of injury!
Support the trunk in the fully
opened position with the suitable
apparatus.

Disassemble the ball socket (1)
with the clamp (2).
Feed out the spindle drive (3)
towards the bottom.

Repeat the repair procedure for the opposite side, and then reinstall all removed parts in the reverse order of their
removal.
Initialize automatic operation of the tailgate using the service function in the diagnosis system.
Select: Body / Automatic luggage compartment lid actuation / Power tailgate initialization.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

Labor operation code 51 24 350 is a Main labor operation. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair,
use the Plus code labor operation 51 24 850 instead.
Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of
the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the “Search” button, and then enter the
applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.
Even though work time labor operation code 61 00 006 ends in “006,” it is not considered a Main labor operation.
Also, since the “work time” FRU allowance to be claimed is specified, a separate punch time is not required.
