Service Action: Remove and Discard Water Drain Plugs from E-Box
MODEL

F30 (3 Series)

SITUATION

Water leaks into the cabin due to clogged drain plugs in the E-boxes.
CAUSE

The drain plug slots are too small and clog.
AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves F3x Models produced from October 2011 to January 2014.
First check if a Service Action label with a code number 668 is already attached to the B-pillar.
If a code number 668 has been punched out, the Campaign has already been performed and no further action is
necessary.
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in the
"Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.
PROCEDURE

Note: No parts are required.
The repair procedure describes removing certain fasteners of the wheel house trim to gain easy access to the E-box
drain plugs. The drain plugs will be removed from both E-Boxes and discarded using the following procedure:

1. Raise the vehicle and turn the
steering wheel to easily access
the lower wheel house trim
fasteners.

2. Remove the seven fasteners as
shown.
Note: The picture is of the front
passenger’s side wheel house
trim.
Do not remove the wheel.
The wheel is removed in the
photo for clarity.

3. Remove the five fasteners as
shown.

4. Pull the wheel house trim down
partially to expose the drain
plug. The picture shows the oval

E-box drain plug (1) from
underneath the vehicle.

5. To remove the drain plug,
follow the arrow direction and
pull out downwards. Discard the
drain plug.
With the drain plug removed,
check inside the E-box body
opening and remove any debris.
Reinstall the removed fasteners
from the wheel housing trim.
Perform the same procedure for
the other side.
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number
668. After the vehicle has been checked and/or
corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-431) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in
the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 668 (2), printed on the
label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the
old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in
the punched-out hole of the new label.
